Saturday, October 18, 2025

The inauguration of Dr. Paul Burkhardt as the 8th president of Naropa University is more than a ceremonial milestone—it is a celebration of community, shared values, and collective vision. Together, we will welcome new leadership that honors the spirit of our university while guiding us toward new opportunities for growth and transformation.

Naropa’s Board of Trustees is delighted to welcome President Paul Burkhardt and his partner, Dr. Zoë Hammer, into our community. Since beginning his tenure on August 1, President Burkhardt has been actively engaging with Naropa’s leadership, faculty, staff, students, and trustees. He and President Emeritus Chuck Lief, who recently retired, have worked closely together to ensure a seamless transition in this historic 51st year of Naropa University.

With President Burkhardt’s leadership and his alignment with Naropa’s mission and core values, we are confident that Naropa’s legacy will not only continue but also flourish for the next fifty years and beyond. We hope you will join us in celebration of this historic new chapter at Naropa.

Resilient Futures Scholarship Fund

During this challenging time of policy change and federal financial aid reductions, your support for the Resilient Futures scholarship at Naropa University is more vital than ever. The elimination of Graduate Plus Loans starting in Fall 2026 means that our graduate students will likely have greater financial need.

NOW is the time to invest in a future shaped by conscious, compassionate leaders.

About the President

“As I join the Naropa University community, I am filled with a sense of deep gratitude and responsibility. In a time defined by division and insecurity, Naropa’s mission and approach to education – rooted in contemplative practice and guided by compassion, critical inquiry, and courageous engagement – give me so much hope for the future! "

—President Paul Burkhardt
Paul Burkhardt head shot

Paul Burkhardt, PhD

Dr. Paul Burkhardt begins as President at a time when the higher education landscape is undergoing constant evolution. In his new role, he will focus on several key areas:

  • Providing future-focused and student-centered leadership that anticipates trends in higher education.
  • Creating a vision for the future and leading Naropa through necessary and innovative changes to meet the current and future needs of a global student and faculty body.
  • Empowering an effective leadership team to achieve administrative, academic, research. and service goals.
  • Working with development staff to build a strategic plan for the next decade of fundraising and development.
  • Collaborating with faculty to create and support an evolving academic plan for Naropa’s future.

Dr. Burkhardt most recently served as Provost at the University of Olivet in Michigan; and, for many years, was the Executive Vice President and Provost at Prescott College in Arizona. Since 2007, he has worked with the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the largest regional accreditor, as an accreditation team member and team chair, as well as a consultant evaluator in dozens of site visits to universities across 19 states.

Paul is recognized for his adept handling of student and faculty needs amid periods of rapid enrollment increase, and for leading inclusive group processes that reinforce the power of shared governance and effective collaboration among students, staff, and faculty. Paul is well-versed in transformational partnerships and has built many reciprocal and lasting relationships with schools, community organizations, unions, and businesses. He believes these collaborations nurture abundant opportunities and resources.

Turning the Wheel: A Flourishing Future

Naropa University’s flourishing future is rooted in growing our scale to grow our impact.

A flourishing future is one where we graduate more students who carry contemplative education into the world. In a time when knowledge, technology, and skills abound, Naropa’s distinction is its commitment to evolving not only the mind but the heart: cultivating compassion and kindness—empathy rather than apathy—and fostering the collaborative, engaged transformation our world so deeply needs. We need Naropa to be sustainable, not just for our students, but also to invest in the employees who continue to invest in us.
Naropa University Inaugurates Dr. Paul Burkhardt as New President

Naropa University has officially inaugurated Dr. Paul Burkhardt as its new president, marking the start of a new era for the pioneering institution of contemplative higher education. The Presidential Inauguration event, held on Saturday, October 18, welcomed Dr. Burkhardt as the university’s eighth president.

With more than 25 years of experience in higher education leadership, Dr. Burkhardt joins Naropa after most recently serving as provost at the University of Olivet in Michigan. For many years prior to that, he was the executive vice president and provost at Prescott College in Arizona, an institution that is mission-aligned with Naropa in creating educational environments that engage both the mind and the heart.
