New Program Name & Redesigned Curriculum
We are excited to share some important updates specific to the Transpersonal Art Therapy concentration within our Clinical Mental Health Counseling master’s degree program.
What Will Stay the Same
- Our foundational commitments remain unchanged: Mindfulness meditation training, studio art, community-based service, and the integration of transpersonal theory with clinical approaches to counseling.
Our clinically-focused degree continues to prepare students to become both clinical mental health counselors and art therapists. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Council for Art Therapy Education (ACATE). - We remain rooted in transpersonal theory, integrating insights and practices from world wisdom traditions with modern clinical approaches.
Our curriculum blends critical thinking, academic rigor, and contemplative practices with the development of art-based clinical skills. Students are supported in cultivating moment-to-moment awareness of self, while exploring the impact of self on others and the world around them.
What Will Change
Beginning Fall 2025, we will be implementing two meaningful changes:
- A return to our original name: To better reflect our alignment with the American Art Therapy Association, the profession of art therapy, and the accreditation we hold, the name of our concentration will return to Transpersonal Art Therapy. This change honors our history, reaffirms our identity, and ensures clarity for students, alumni, and the broader field.
- A redesigned curriculum: We are excited to offer a refreshed curriculum with improved sequencing of clinical coursework and added flexibility, including some courses that are now offered online.
We are also adding a course on Addictions and Substance Counseling, as well as Family/Marriage/Partnership Counseling. Adding these courses align our curriculum more fully with CACREP guidelines and are designed to enhance student success, ensuring our graduates are well-prepared for the evolving needs of the counseling profession.
