Compassion-Based Boundaries: An Introduction

About This Program

In daily life, we’re often confronted with difficult situations that demand we not only consider our own and others’ well-being, but also weigh possible tradeoffs between the two.

These encounters can leave us feeling overwhelmed and without a clear path forward, forced to make compromises that leave ourselves or others with unmet needs. Is there enough care and compassion to go around? How can we learn to better navigate challenging situations that push and pull our hearts and minds in multiple directions at once?

In this workshop, Director of Naropa’s Cognitive and Affective Science Lab, Jordan Quaglia, PhD, offers an introduction to what he calls compassion-based boundaries, a science-backed framework that provides practical skills for navigating complex interpersonal situations.

Together, you’ll explore:

  • Why common approaches to compassion sometimes miss the mark

  • What scientific research has shown about the efficacy of compassion-based boundaries

  • How to cultivate and apply these boundaries using simple mindfulness-based practices

  • How compassion can be applied to the intra/interpersonal challenges shared across diverse social situations

Attendees will walk away from this workshop with a new perspective, supportive practices, and practical skills for applying compassion-based boundaries to challenging situations and encounters.
