Shechen
Rabjam Rinpoche

October 2023 Visit to Colorado

Naropa University and the Ri-mé Society are honored to host Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche’s historic return to Colorado.

Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche is the spiritual heir and grandson of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, and a major holder of the Nyingma teachings of Tibetan Buddhism.

He is the supreme abbot of Shechen Monasteries and Nunneries, and the seventh in the succession of Rabjam Rinpoches. The second Rabjam Rinpoche founded Shechen Monastery in Kham, Eastern Tibet in 1695. When Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche rebuilt Shechen Monastery in Nepal, he appointed Rabjam Rinpoche as abbot.

Rabjam Rinpoche has worked diligently to ensure that the transmission of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche’s vision and teachings continue in an unbroken authentic lineage. Rinpoche first visited Colorado in 1976 as an 8-year old child with his grandfather, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, and has returned a number of times.

This is a historic return of Rabjam Rinpoche to Colorado, and he will be continuing the vital connection between Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and Shechen, as well as with a host of other contemporary teachers who were raised and trained by his grandfather.

This visit is proudly supported by Naropa Extended Campus, our continuing education and public programs division.

Enlightened Courage:

Vital Instructions for the Cultivation of Awakened Heart

Times Vary | Weekend Wisdom Intensive | Live Online & In-Person
Naropa University Nalanda Events Center – 6287 Arapahoe Ave. Boulder, CO

The Buddhist teachings identify bodhicitta, “awakened heart,” as the key to awakening one’s fundamental sanity and enlightened nature. It is the cause for being able to fearlessly and genuinely help others and contribute to the world’s well-being. The teachings of The Seven Point Mind Training (lojong) comprise the principal instructions on how to arouse one’s bodhicitta and enact compassion, penetrating intelligence, and consummate skillful ability in the world. Atisha Dipankara was the 11th Century historical source of these teachings in Tibet, bringing them from Indonesia and India. They form part of the basic foundation, heart, and motivating force of Mahayana Buddhism.

Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, widely regarded as one of the greatest Tibetan Buddhist masters of our times, transmitted these seminal teachings in the book Enlightened Courage. His grandson and spiritual heir, Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche, will impart these vital instructions and practices in this seminar. These teachings and practices are all the more relevant and essential during intense social, political, and environmental turbulence.

Sadhana of Mahamudra Abhisheka

2:00 PM – 5:00 PM MT Public Empowerment | In-Person Only
Boulder Elks Lodge – 3975 28th St. Boulder, CO

“The Sadhana of Mahamudra was received as a terma (treasure) vision, and composed by Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche during a retreat at Taktsang, Bhutan in 1968. The Sadhana is a complete and profound Vajrayana Buddhist practice, particularly directed toward revitalizing spiritual inspiration and insight in these times of global materialism and sectarian strife. The Sadhana was a major breakthrough for Trungpa Rinpoche in his aspiration and quest to establish the Vajrayana teachings in the modern world. It is a potent embodiment of the teaching, lineage and transmission of Buddhism, and joins the two great lineages of Mahamudra and Ati. It continues to be a powerful portal of the Buddhist teachings and practice to the world, and is particularly important now, during these increasingly challenging times.”

An abhisheka is a Vajrayana Buddhist empowerment, or transmission of teachings directly from teacher to student. This transmission will be given by Rabjam Rinpoche, and in the spirit in which Trungpa Rinpoche presented it, is open to all.

Guhyagarbha and White Manjushri Abhishekas

2:00 PM – 5:00 PM MT Vajrayana Student Empowerment | In-Person Only
Boulder Elks Lodge – 3975 28th St. Boulder, CO

“The Guhyagarbha Tantra, ‘The Secret Essence’, is called the ‘King of all Tantras.’ It is the proclamation of the primordial Buddha Samantabhadra of the view beyond duality and concept, and regards everything, all phenomena, as the display of primordial wisdom, utterly open and luminous. With early roots in India then transmitted to Tibet by Padmasambhava and Vimalamitra, Guhyagarbha is the foundation for all Vajrayana view and practice in the Nyingma lineage, and is highly important for all of Tibetan Buddhism. It is ‘as vast as the sky and as deep as the ocean.’ This abhisheka is rarely given and the opportunity to receive it from Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche is particularly precious.”

“The White Manjushri Sadhana in the tradition of Mati Panchen is a very important Manjushri practice for the Ri-mé tradition. It was practiced by Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye, and many others in the cultivation of their immense knowledge and wisdom. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche composed a sadhana based on it, and this will be transmitted by Rabjam Rinpoche in this abhisheka.”

While there are no specific practice requirements beyond those stated in the “Eligibility Requirements” (See Below),
this empowerment is open to Vajrayana students only.
