Reporting a Concern

If you feel that your rights under this policy have been violated, please use the following procedure:

Where to Report Gender Equity, Sexual Misconduct and/or Relationship Violence Claims

If your concern involves any incident of gender discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual exploitation or coercion, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, or retaliation, please report your claim directly to the Title IX Coordinator.

If for any reason you are uncomfortable reporting the claim to the Title IX Coordinator, please report your claim to either the Interim Director of Human Resources, the Dean of Students, or the Special Advisor to the President. All claims made under this policy will be reported to the Title IX Coordinator regardless of whether you choose to do so directly.

Where to Report non-Title IX Protected Class Harassment or Discrimination

Please report concerns regarding protected class harassment or discrimination to the appropriate Official with Authority.

  • Interim Director of Human Resources Bob Brown serves as the Human Resources Official with Authority and oversees the implementation of the Recipient’s Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity plan, and the Recipient’s policy on equal opportunity, harassment, and nondiscrimination in cases where the Respondent is an employee.
  • The Title IX Coordinator serves as the Official with Authority and oversees the implementation of the Recipient’s Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity plan, Civil Rights protected class compliance, and the Recipient’s policy on equal opportunity, harassment, and nondiscrimination in cases where the Respondent is a student.

Duty to Report

All Naropa University faculty and staff are classified as Mandated Reporters, meaning that faculty or staff who become aware of an instance of protected class harassment and/or discrimination including gender discrimination, sexual misconduct or relationship violence, that employee is required to report that information to the Title IX Coordinator. Naropa University students are strongly encouraged to report instances of Gender Discrimination, Sexual Misconduct or Relationship Violence to the Title IX Coordinator regardless of whether they are a victim or a witness. IMPORTANT: Employees of the Naropa Counseling Center are NOT deemed Mandated Reporters under this policy and may keep confidential any information disclosed to them about violations of this policy. Currently, the Naropa Counseling Center is the only on-campus confidential resource

Confidentiality

If a Complainant requests confidentiality, the University will take all reasonable steps to investigate and respond to the Complaint consistent with the request for confidentiality and to the extent permitted by law, but such a request may hamper the University’s investigation and hearing, and confidentiality cannot be guaranteed. The Title IX Coordinator will evaluate all requests for confidentiality in the context of the University’s responsibility to provide a safe and nondiscriminatory environment to all members of its community. Other university personnel are not permitted to promise or ensure confidentiality of information. At Naropa only employees in the Naropa Counseling Center are authorized and required to keep information confidential. All other faculty and staff are deemed mandated reporters and must report any suspected or known incident of protected class harassment and/or discrimination including gender discrimination, sexual misconduct or relationship violence to the Title IX Coordinator. All mandated reporters will use best efforts to inform potential complainants of this duty to report before any information that the complainant may want to otherwise withhold as confidential is shared. The University will complete any publicly available record keeping, including Clery Act reporting and disclosure, without inclusion of any personally identifiable information about the Complainant.

Making a Complaint

Anyone who has a concern of harassment or discrimination committed by a student, staff, faculty member, or 3rd party contractor of Naropa University may make a complaint. Sometimes you may not be sure how far you want to go with a concern, issue or complaint. Please go to the HR Director, Dean of Students or Title IX Coordinator for support and consultation when you are considering pursuing a Complaint against a faculty, staff member or another student.

Complaint Process. Individuals who wish to file a Complaint of Gender Discrimination, Sexual Misconduct or Relationship Violence against a student, staff member or faculty should address their concerns to the Title IX Coordinator. If for any reason you are uncomfortable reporting the Complaint to the Title IX Coordinator, or they are unavailable, you may report the Complaint to the Director of Human Resources or the Dean of Students.

Individuals who wish to file a Complaint of Protected Class Harassment and/or Discrimination against a student, staff member or faculty should address their concerns to the HR Director if the report is coming from an employee.

Individuals who wish to file a Complaint of Protected Class Harassment and/or Discrimination against a student, staff member or faculty should address their concerns to the Dean of Students if the report is coming from a student.

If for any reason you are uncomfortable reporting the Complaint to these roles, or they are unavailable, you may report the Complaint to the Special Advisor to the President.

All Complaints, regardless of whom they are filed against must be in writing, should be filed as soon as possible, and must include as much of the following information as possible:

  1. The name, department, and position (including all that apply: undergraduate, graduate, faculty, staff, employee) of the person or persons making the Complaint and contact information for the same.
  2. The name, department, and position of the person or persons who allegedly engaged in Gender Discrimination, Sexual Misconduct or Relationship Violence.
  3. A description of the incident(s), including the date(s), location(s), and the presence of any witnesses.
  4. If the Complainant is an employee: the alleged effect of the incident(s) on the Complainant’s position, salary, benefits, promotional opportunities, or other terms or conditions of employment.
  5. The names of other students or employees who might have been subject to the same or similar acts of discrimination or harassment.
  6. Any steps the Complainant has taken to try to stop the offensive conduct if any, (not required).
  7. Any other information the Complainant believes to be relevant to the acts of Protected Class Harassment and/or Discrimination including Gender Discrimination, Sexual Misconduct or Relationship Violence including Harassment or Retaliation.

Naropa Campuses Closed on Friday, March 15, 2024

Due to adverse weather conditions, all Naropa campuses will be closed Friday, March 15, 2024.  All classes that require a physical presence on campus will be canceled. All online and low-residency programs are to meet as scheduled.

Based on the current weather forecast, the Healing with the Ancestors Talk & Breeze of Simplicity program scheduled for Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday will be held as planned.

Staff that do not work remotely or are scheduled to work on campus, can work remotely. Staff that routinely work remotely are expected to continue to do so.

As a reminder, notifications will be sent by e-mail and the LiveSafe app.  

Regardless of Naropa University’s decision, if you ever believe the weather conditions are unsafe, please contact your supervisor and professors.  Naropa University trusts you to make thoughtful and wise decisions based on the conditions and situation in which you find yourself in.
