Spencer Conroy, CPA

Chief Financial Officer

Office of Finance

Spencer Conroy is a seasoned finance executive and transformational leader with deep expertise in higher education and nonprofit organizations. He brings nearly two decades of experience spanning financial strategy, operational restructuring, treasury and endowment management, digital transformation, and institutional turnaround leadership. Known for his ability to stabilize complex organizations and restore confidence in financial operations, Spencer has partnered closely with presidents, boards, and executive leadership teams to drive long-term fiscal sustainability and mission alignment.

Spencer currently serves as Naropa University’s Chief Financial Officer, where he has led comprehensive revitalization efforts within business and finance operations. In this role, he rebuilt a depleted finance team, implemented modern budgeting and reporting systems, restructured charts of accounts, and restored the timely production of audited financial statements. His leadership has enabled improved liquidity, supported strategic cost-reduction initiatives, and provided institutional stakeholders with clear, data-driven insight into financial performance and long-term sustainability.

In parallel, Spencer is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Heightened Education Consulting LLC, a management and financial consulting firm serving nonprofit and higher education institutions nationwide. Through this platform, he provides executive advisory, interim leadership, planning, and training services across finance, financial reporting, enrollment management, technology, fundraising, and organizational leadership. His client portfolio includes institutions such as Spelman University, the University of St. Thomas, McMurry University, and Ashland University.

Previously, Spencer served as Vice President of Finance and Business Affairs at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, TX, where he oversaw a $100 million operating budget, a $150 million endowment, and a broad portfolio including finance, IT, facilities, institutional research, public safety, dining services, and auxiliary operations. During his tenure, he helped grow operating revenues by more than 44 percent over five years, executed a major bond refinancing that improved liquidity and reduced annual debt service, led enterprise-wide restructuring initiatives, and championed cultural transformation across multiple departments. He was frequently relied upon to communicate complex financial matters to the Board of Directors and external stakeholders with clarity and credibility.

Earlier in his career, Spencer held senior leadership roles at Saint Joseph’s College as Vice President for Business Affairs and Treasurer and previously as Controller, where he guided strategic planning, investment management, academic restructuring, facilities reorganization, and ultimately the systematic wind-down of institutional operations. He began his professional career at Crowe as an auditor, serving clients across higher education, healthcare, manufacturing, construction, and private equity.

Spencer holds a Master of Business Administration from Saint Joseph’s College and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Taylor University. He remains actively engaged in civic and professional service through board and committee roles and has been recognized for his leadership through honors such as Leadership Houston and through multiple nominations for Houston’s 40 Under 40.
