The Naropa community takes pride in its continuing efforts to nurture an environment of belonging for our LGBTQIA2S+ family. We celebrate the rainbow of colors they add to the Naropa tapestry in their roles as students, staff, faculty, alumnx, and supporters.

The legacy of Naropa as a place for freedom of expression, activism, and antidiscrimination still holds true.

Naropa also acknowledges that as a community we still have work to do. As we continue to introduce the community to our renewed Mission, Vision, & Values and explore our new Community Compass, we must recommit ourselves to better allyship for all underserved and underrepresented communities.

Allyship does not begin or end with flying a flag or marching in a parade, but it does include:

🌈 Using preferred pronouns.
🌈 Thinking of non-heteronormative intimate and family arrangements as more than an afterthought.
🌈 Speaking about injustices you witness.
🌈 Taking responsibility for causing harm, regardless of intent.

How will you continue to uplift the LGBTQI2S+ community beyond June?

Thank you for beautifying campus with your incredible artwork, Juan!

"One of the things that drove me into activism and service in my teens was realizing that I was born into a culture that was trying to annihilate my body, spirit, and mind. I was pissed and heartbroken over this and I learned to channel this intense energy into spiritual practice and deeper activism.

Right now I am remembering and calling on all the great beings who came before me and who are still with us now to remember my sacred commitment to never allow the darkness of hate, violence, state, and systematic suppression to consume me. I will survive peoples’ weaponizing of their insecurity, narcissism, and trauma against me and my communities. I will not be quiet nor will I disappear.

I am urging all you spiritual leaders, healers, mystics, intuitives, magik practitioners, and yogis to remember your power and confirm your allegiance to light, love, compassion, and community and disrupt this darkness and start acting up. Now is not the time to get more holy. Now is the time to get clear about protecting everyone’s right to be safe, happy, and resourced." - @lamarodofficial (repost)

Good thing we have a compassion practice to turn toward difficulty with awareness and lovingkindness, right?

If you don't yet or need a refresher on yours, Naropa Faculty (Carla RM Burns, MDiv and Charlotte Z. Rotterdam) are teaching an experiential workshop on it next Tuesday evening, June 28th, 6-8pm MT.

Because do the tough lessons actually end?

“Naropa is an expensive school in an expensive city, so you immediately think that everyone here will be relatively comfortable,” says Director of Campus and Residence Life Stephan Taylor.

“People don’t realize that more than half of our students are eligible for extensive financial aid, such as Pell Grants, so we have a mix of people who can afford to go skiing every weekend versus people who are scraping every penny they can to be here.”

Arising out of the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, Naropa’s Emergency Housing Program is space-dependent and offers students a two-week stay free of charge in an apartment that’s not currently being used. For longer stays, students pay a nightly rate of $30. “I think that Naropa has always been trying to assist students in this way. And a big part of that is our mission to be radically compassionate because many schools don’t offer that,” Taylor says.

Happy International Yoga Day from our ( retired and current) beloved yoga studies faculty and yoga community!

Fun Fact: Naropa's 1974 inauguration was marked by Ram Dass teaching the Yogas of the Bhagavad Gītā to over one thousand students, and we've remained dedicated to yoga studies ever since. The Master of Arts in Yoga Studies is one of only two such yoga degrees in the country.

Don't miss tomorrow's sunrise (5:14 am!) that marks the midsummer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere! The sun is at the very peak of its power, nature is in bloom, and traditionally, cultures around the world have seen summer as a celebration of the strength and fertility of Mother Earth. Begin this solstice by waking up early to watch the sunrise when it is believed its life force is the strongest.

How will you celebrate?

Happy Juneteenth, beloved community! This is a day of remembrance, a time to reflect, a time to make reparations, and to recommit to the work of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.

Juneteenth amplifies and expands the liberatory arc of the Black experience throughout the nation, so that we all can take a moment together to reflect on the freedom from suffering and the joys of being free, the responsibilities that come with being free, and the ways we protect each other from future enslavement - including mass incarceration.

Naropa strives to create an intentional future filled with students, faculty, staff, and other community members of every color, race and ethnicity, striving to align with their ancestral lineages and dream into a new era of possibility.

To this end, Naropa now has year-round staffing dedicated to fostering the development of JEDI (Justice Equity Diversity Inclusion) values for all our students, staff, and faculty. But more than the focus of a select few each of us has the opportunity to commit to supporting Naropa’s mission and values and I appreciate the efforts by our community.

Ways you can celebrate #Juneteenth this year:

❇️ Boulder County Juneteenth Celebration: June 19th, 1- 6pm at Roosevelt Park, Longmont, CO. Free and open to the public.

❇️ Denver Juneteenth Music Festival, June 18th and 19th, Five Points, Denver, CO

❇️ Support Black-Owned Businesses (today and always)

With appreciation,
