Naropa University Launches Joanna Macy Center

May 14, 2015 (Boulder, CO)—Naropa University today announced the creation of the Joanna Macy Center. A parallel announcement was made today at the first-ever White House Summit on Buddhism in Washington, DC.

Created in collaboration with Dr. Joanna Macy and made possible with a generous lead grant, the new Center aspires to hold and develop the vision and legacy of Dr. Joanna Macy’s work in three specific areas: Dr. Macy’s root teachings, known as The Work That Reconnects (WTR); Buddhist scholarship; and Nuclear Guardianship. The Center is a platform for further advancement of and training in The Work That Reconnects within Naropa University, the local community, and the world at-large.

The namesake of the Center is Dr. Joanna Macy, an environmental activist, and author, as well as a scholar of Buddhism, general systems theory, and deep ecology. Between 1983 and 2012, Macy wrote and contributed to eight books on subjects around WTR and deep ecology, as well as other scholarly and ecological works. In its first year, the Center will host a Lecture Series, trainings and workshops around The Work That Reconnects, and serve as a hub for organizations working on nuclear guardianship.

“Naropa University has enjoyed a decades-long relationship with Joanna Macy and her work, and we are delighted that the Joanna Macy Center will continue her work by training generations of scholars and activists,” said Naropa University President Charles G. Lief. “Not only will this Center greatly benefit Naropa’s graduate and undergraduate environmental studies students, but will also ensure that Naropa continues to attract visionary thinkers and scholars on environmental justice issues.”
