January 14, 2015 (Boulder, CO)—Naropa University today announced the creation of the Authentic Leadership Center (ALC). The Center will serve experienced and emerging leaders in business, education, health care, government, and nonprofit sectors, and will offer conferences, workshops, and webinars, as well as certificate and graduate programs.
The Authentic Leadership Center combines the network of practitioners and teachers from the acclaimed Authentic Leadership in Action (ALIA) Institute, formerly based in Nova Scotia, Canada, with Naropa's successful Authentic Leadership Certificate program. The vision of the Center will be to provide transformational learning that draws upon the disciplines of contemplative practice, organizational learning, expressive arts, neuroscience, and complexity science for improved performance at work and in life. Susan Skjei, PhD, who has served in leadership roles in both organizations for the last fifteen years, will be the director of the new Center.
As innovative leadership programs, including mindfulness training, become more widely offered, the Authentic Leadership Center will play a critical role in ensuring that leaders in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors can benefit from cutting-edge research and practice. By bringing the ALIA community and members of its former governing council into the Authentic Leadership Center, Naropa University will dramatically increase its ability to provide quality programming to a global audience.
"The creation of the Authentic Leadership Center provides a tremendous opportunity to combine the pioneering contemplative educational framework that Naropa University has delivered for forty years with the international reach of the ALIA Institute," said President of Naropa University, Charles G. Lief. "Naropa and ALIA have long had many faculty, including leadership trainers and artists, in common. Under Susan Skjei's leadership, the Authentic Leadership Center will be meeting the needs of leaders everywhere in a holistic way."
"As the ALIA Institute sought even more effective ways to bring its fourteen years of success to scale and to benefit a wider audience, Naropa University seemed an ideal new home," said Susan Skjei. "We are pleased to be implementing within the ALC the distributive leadership model created by ALIA with its vision to empower local communities as centers for authentic leadership in action."
