September 24, 2014 (Boulder, CO): Essence represents Naropa University’s instructors who work in the Visual Arts and Art Therapy disciplines. The exhibit centers on the meaning of the word essence: the basic nature of a thing-the quality or qualities that make it what it is; or something that exists-an entity. The work illustrates how art embodies the essence of its creation and/or image whether it is abstract, surreal, representational or collected materials.
In philosophy, essence is the attribute or set of attributes that make an entity or substance what it fundamentally is, and which it has by necessity, and without which it loses its identity. The concept originates with Aristotle’s perception "the what it was to be”. One can examine the need or purpose of the arts in society but not without the essence of the artist and their work. The exhibiting artists are: Liz Acosta; Tyler Alpern; Daniel Blausey; Sue Hammond West; Cynthia Moku; Jill Powers; Shana Salaff; Charmain Schuh; Robert Spellman; and Diane Sturm Fekete. Essence contains powerful, contemplative and contemporary works in painting, drawing, ceramic, installation and mixed media.
The Lounge Gallery is a new community space operated by Visual Arts students through mentoring by the Gallery Manager to create experiential exhibits while learning curatorial, design and installation skills. Naropa University Galleries offer an experience of the arts in a contemplative environment committed to the human experience of visual, perceptual and energetic transmissions through art. We are home to five art galleries throughout the campuses that present contemporary and traditional media by students and faculty, regional, national and international artists.
