energy sources

Boulder, CO (April 22, 2014): Naropa University has been recognized as one of eight premier colleges and universities in the United States for its commitment to sustainability and renewable energy. Naropa's designation was based in part on the fact that 100% of its electricity needs derive from renewable energy sources.

Naropa University was included in the list based on evaluations by The Princeton Review, in collaboration with the U.S. Green Building Council. Criteria included the presence and availability of sustainability-focused degrees, percentage of the school's new construction as LEED-certified, and the percentage of the school's total food expenditures toward local and/or organic food purchases.

"Sustainability is embedded within Naropa University's mission, and we are honored to be named as one of America's greenest schools," said Charles G. Lief, president of Naropa University. "Naropa University recognizes the critical importance of taking actions toward reducing carbon emissions, including divestment from fossil fuels and a firm commitment to renewable energy. It is imperative that America's colleges and universities lead on sustainability, and Naropa University is proud to play its part."

A core value and educational goal of Naropa University is the practice of sustainability at the individual, institutional, and global level. Most recently, in December 2013, Naropa's Board of Trustees unanimously agreed to formally divest from any and all investments in fossil fuel. Earlier, in 2007, Naropa committed to sharply reduce and eventually eliminate all emissions contributing to climate change, and signed the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment, along with more than 400 other academic institutions across the country.
