(Boulder, CO February 1st, 2020) - On Friday evening to Sunday February 14-16 Naropa University is offering a weekend program called Opening the Heart: A Compassion Training and Dialogue.

The faculty includes the renowned Buddhist teacher and end of life care educator Roshi Joan Halifax, Rev. Mark Unno a Shin Buddhist priest and Associate Professor of East Asian Buddhism at the University of Oregon, and Acharya Judith Simmer-Brown, Distinguished Professor of Contemplative and Religious Studies at Naropa.

Throughout Buddhist history, the compassion teachings and practices have been foundational for many diverse schools and cultures. Each school, however, offers distinctive perspectives and meditations to deepen compassion. This program brings the Zen, Shin (another form of Japanese Buddhism), and Tibetan traditions together with talks about the various traditions as well as practical training in compassion. The three renowned teachers will join in an historic conversation about how we can open the heart and meet the suffering of our world.

Although all the world religions and indigenous traditions have their own versions, it has been demonstrated by neuroscience that a compassionate attitude, in addition to motivating the practitioner to relieve suffering of others, can reduce stress and support greater personal resilience. Health care professionals, first responders, social activists, teachers and many others in professions which engage people or situations where suffering and stress is present are finding great personal benefit from learning tools which support compassion.

The program will be held in the Events Center on Naropa’s Nalanda Campus at 6287 Arapahoe Ave. It begins on Friday evening February 14 and concludes on Sunday afternoon February 16. More information is available on at www.naropa.edu and tickets are on Eventbrite.
