Courses & Requirements

A Bachelor of Arts Degree (120 credits) consists of Core Curriculum (24 credits) and at least one major (36-60 credits), as well as minors and/or elective courses of the student’s choosing.

This 51-credit online major is grounded in the same contemplative, socially engaged and relational approaches to art therapy that support Naropa’s successful and unique in-person art therapy programs. Undergraduate art therapy is a pre-professional degree program that prepares students for graduate studies in art therapy or other professional fields. The online BA program builds on the accessibility and equity of engaged community from a distance so that students can create meaningful change in their own lives and within their own home communities. We actively support all online BA students in making positive impacts as aspiring art therapists throughout their own journey.

Our unique approach to our undergraduate curriculum includes courses that focus on art therapy theory, visual arts, world art history, psychology, and social needs; students also benefit from community-based service-learning opportunities. Students engage actively in contemplative exploration, personal art-making, artist identity development, and comprehensive study of the therapeutic theories to prepare for a career as an art therapist. Online BA students explore and cultivate processes and practices for meaning-making and self-reflection using art and gain a comprehensive understanding of the spectrum of practice, populations served by art therapy, and how to utilize art as a healing modality. Students will also benefit from mentorship provided by art therapy faculty who make the translation from theory to practice in tangible and practical ways.

One challenge with online school work can be the lack of transitional space within which one can be immersed in study. Crafting artistic sacred spaces in one’s home environment, whether it be metaphorical or tangible, allows for deep engagement with the material and tapping into the waiting potential of therapeutic space. We focus first on our own inner and outer experience and then find the capacity to expand our reach to others.

The program also cultivates academic excellence and contemplative awareness, fosters a framework to develop a thriving studio practice, and provides you the opportunity to probe more deeply into art therapy by continuing your education in Naropa’s Graduate School of Counseling & Psychology concentration in Transpersonal Art Therapy or another art therapy graduate program.
