Gail King: SUMMER

Spring '14 TOC

summer near its end
the tale told by leaves
that gather at edges
fruit’s drop ends
still hot enough
to make a plum a prune
fog comes early
stays late
some have fires at night

stubborn I sit in my tank top and flippers
not ready
not shipped off
I could lounge
play bagpipes till dawn
not ready
for the wild blue yonder

cling to barbeques and baseball
girls playing badminton
hot dogs, ginger ale
bees and their flowers
up to no good
with reading in the hammock
peeling time like a grapefruit
