Leigh Fondakowski, Emmy Award-nominated screenwriter and longtime member of the Tectonic Theatre Project, is currently rehearsing her latest self-authored play, “Spill,” as part of Naropa University’s Fall Contemporary Performance MFA program.
Fondakowski was Head Writer for The Laramie Project, and is an Emmy-nominated co-screenwriter for the adaptation of The Laramie Project for HBO, as well as a co-writer of The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, and – while she has spent time as Naropa University Faculty in the past, this is her first experience directing a play for the Contemporary Performance MFA program.
“Spill” is the result of over 200 hours of interviews collected in the aftermath of the devastating and historic oil spill caused by the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico in April, 2010.
Deepwater Horizon, leased by British Petroleum (BP), and owned and operated by Transocean, exploded and burned off the coast of Louisiana, killing 11 workers and triggering the largest oil spill in history. For 87 days, millions of gallons of environmentally damaging oil flowed into the Gulf of Mexico in what President Barack Obama called “the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced.”
This can’t-miss theatrical event goes beyond the headlines to tell vivid personal stories from all sides of the country’s greatest environmental disaster. The play originally premiered at Louisiana State University’s Swine Palace in Baton Rouge, LA in March, 2014.

“Spill” will be presented at Naropa’s Performing Arts Center – 2130 Arapahoe Dr, Boulder, 80301 – weekend nights at 7:30 from Friday, October 14 through Saturday, October 29, 2016, and tickets are $20 general admission/$15 for Non-Naropa University students with student ID. Tickets are free for Naropa students.
