Types of Aid: Scholarships

The deadline for scholarship application materials for most institutional scholarships is April 1. Some scholarships may have different deadlines and those dates will be specified within the description. Also, see scholarship descriptions for detailed information on qualifications and requirements.

All Naropa scholarships are need-based and are open to international students unless stated otherwise.

Applicants for all scholarships listed in this section must:

  1. Apply for financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA, as discussed below) or International Student Application if applicable by the March 1st deadline. An analysis of the information on the financial aid application must indicate financial need as determined by federal and institutional assessment methods.
  2. Have a completed admissions application on file for one of the university's degree programs.
Submit scholarship application materials according the requirements listed below for the specific scholarship to which you are applying.

Naropa Scholarship for Entering Students
Naropa Scholarships for Entering Students are awarded to a limited number of entering, full-time students from all programs. The award amount ranges from $500 to $9,000 per year.

Naropa in Prague: Engaged Writer Scholarship
The Engaged Writer Scholarship is designed to promote study abroad opportunities for writing students interested in studying in Prague. All visiting and Naropa students may apply. Offers two awards of $1,500.

Frederick P. Lenz Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship In Relgious Studies
This scholarship is awarded to two full-time undergraduates, entering their junior or senior year, who exhibit academic promise and an interest in and commitment to meditation and participation in the phenomenon of American Buddhism.

Aimee Grunburger Award
Offers a $500 award to one female graduate or undergraduate Writing and Poetics student or noncredit Summer Writing Program student who is over thirty years of age and who demonstrates excellence in the field of poetry.

The Lucien Wulsin Scholarship in the Performing Arts
Awarded to two incoming or returning MFA in Theater or undergraduate BFA students. The scholarship is available only to U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The award amount is $3,550 and is not renewable, although students may reapply for subsequent years.

The W.E.B DuBois Scholarship
Awarded to one incoming or returning, graduate or undergraduate, student of color per year. The scholarship is available only to U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The amount of the award is $1,400/year and is not renewable, although students may reapply for subsequent years.

Colin Wolcott Music Scholarship
Awarded to two outstanding undergraduate music students each year by Naropa’s Music Department. Offers a $1,400 non-renewable award.

Gerald Red Elk Scholarship
Awarded to one Native American student at a time, the scholarship was established to honor Gerald Red Elk. The award amount is $4,000/year and is renewable.

Zora Neale Hurston Scholarship
Awarded to selected students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds for one session of the Summer Writing Program.

Roof Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to one or more students exhibiting financial need. The award amount is $2,000.

Presidential Scholarship
Awarded to outstanding degree-seeking undergraduates who have completed at least one full semester and will have completed at least two semesters by May.

Marvin I. Naiman Scholarship
Awarded annually to one nontraditional with financial need. New students who are twenty-three or older, and students returning to school after a substantial hiatus are eligible.

The Charles B. Edison Jinpa Scholarship
Offers a $1,500 award to one or two returning full-time graduate or undergraduate, underrepresented students per year. The scholarship is available to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Hearst Scholarship for Underserved Populations
The Hearst Scholarship will be awarded during the 2007–08 and 2008–09 academic year to full-time undergraduate students who demonstrate significant financial need, academic capability or potential, are residents of the United States and are from an underserved or underrepresented population.

Francis Harwood Scholarship
The Francis Harwood scholarship awards $1,300 to one outstanding Environmental Studies student each year based on departmental recommendation.

Nancy Ashman Memorial Scholarship
Awards $1,300 to one entering freshman who exhibits strong academic promise and significant financial need.

John W. Cobb Scholarship
Awards $1,500 annually to one undergraduate student engaged in the study of peace at Naropa University.

Martin Janowitz Scholarship
Awarded annually to an undergraduate in environmental studies or to a graduate student in environmental leadership.

Daniels Opportunity Scholarship
The Daniels Opportunity Scholarship will be awarded during the 2008-09 academic year to five full-time undergraduate students with junior or senior standing.  The award amount is $5,000 per year and is awarded for two academic years.
