Requirements for Credit
Students who have elected to take the SWP for credit should consider the following:
Degree Completion
Graduate Students
All Writing and Poetics and Creative Writing graduate students are required to take a total of 16 credits of the SWP to complete their degrees. Writing and Poetics graduate students are encouraged to take four weeks over the course of two summers in order to complete their degree on time. Creative Writing graduate students may opt to take fewer weeks per summer, although all graduate students are ultimately responsible for completing eight weeks during the course of their degree. All students are highly encouraged to consult with their academic advisor to determine the pacing of their degree.
Undergraduate Students
Naropa University undergraduate Writing and Literature students are highly encouraged, but not required to take the SWP. If students do elect to take the Program, the six credits earned (1.5 credits/week) can be used to fulfill a 3-credit writing workshop requirement and a 3-credit literature seminar requirement.
Students enrolled in Naropa’s core college may use two weeks of the SWP to fulfill their Artistic Process requirement.
Attendance Policy for Credit Students
All Graduate and undergraduate students taking any of the SWP for credit are required to attend certain events each week. If you are pursuing credit, please make sure you consult the master schedule for a list of mandatory events, available during the SWP orientation week and during Convocation prior to the start of the Program.
Final Manuscript
Graduate and undergraduate students taking any of the SWP for credit will be required to turn in a final manuscript. Details regarding the specific manuscript requirements will be available during the SWP orientation week.
