Required and Suggested Reading

The Summer Writing Program (SWP) strongly encourages all students to seek out and read the published work of their workshop instructors. Doing so enhances the exchange and dialogue between teachers and students. Faculty books will be available for purchase in the Naropa University Bookstore. Also, feel free to browse the faculty bookshelf in the SWP office library.

Most SWP required books and faculty books are available by ordering directly from Small Press Distribution.

The following book is required for all SWP 2007 students:

Birman, Lisa and Anne Waldman, eds. Civil Disobediences: Poetics and Politics in Action. Minneapolis: Coffee House Press, 2004. ISBN: 9781566891585

We also strongly suggest the following anthology, which is the basis for Week Two of the 2007 program:

Allen, Donald, ed. The New American Poetry: 1945–1960. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1999. ISBN: 0520209532

Required and suggested books for 2007 workshops:

Students should purchase and read required texts before attending class each week. A limited number of books will be available through the Naropa University Bookstore, but it is a good idea to order required texts from Small Press Distribution before the SWP begins. In lieu of, or in addition to, required books, many instructors will hand out photocopied course packets on the first day of class.

This list is current as of April 16, 2007. Look for any additional required book information before the end of May.
