Study Abroad

“Culture hides much more than it reveals, and, strangely enough, what it hides, it hides most effectively from its own participants.”
—Edward T. Hall

Through study, contemplation and experience, Naropa University’s study abroad program offers students an opportunity to communicate across different and diverse cultures. This cultural competence—at home as well as overseas—is a key ability necessary to act skillfully in today’s increasingly multiethnic and globalized world.

Studying and living overseas fosters intercultural competence, critical thinking and the ground for compassionate engagement with the world.

Intercultural study in Naropa University’s study abroad program begins with an examination of one’s own enculturation, and our acquired cultural assumptions, beliefs, values and perceptions.

Students are encouraged to consider that their version of reality—of what is viewed as normal or “natural”—is merely learned and acquired, not innate.

Naropa offers its own students two ways to study and experience an intercultural setting: the Prague Program; and Study Abroad with Partners. In addition, the Prague Program is open to students from other colleges and universities.
