Boulder Contemplative Practice: Fall 2009

Boulder is known for its myriad of spiritual opportunities. Persons new to the area may be excited by the possibilities but, also, overwhelmed by the options. This resource list provides information about some of the ongoing practice situations and spiritual groups available. The listings have some relationship to the Naropa community.

The Naropa Extended Studies program offers a number of weekend and weekly classes, which introduce specific practice or wisdom traditions. Some of the courses offered may be taken for credit. See the Naropa Extended Fall Studies brochure.

Sufism

  • Sufi Musical Meditations. Offered weekly by Elias Amidon, Pir (leader) of the International Sufi Way, a nonsectarian Sufi order in the lineage of Inayat Khan. Contact Elias at 720-563-0409 or eliasmidon@earthlink.net.

  • Walking the Labyrinth—an ancient sacred practice. Located at United Methodist Church (basement), at 14th and Spruce St. Drop-in Mondays-Fridays: 9:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Wednesdays: 6:30–8:30 p.m. and Sundays: 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Call 303-442-3770.

Contemplative Arts

  • Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging). Classes off campus: call Eileen Kay at 303-449-0192.
  • Kyudo (Zen Archery). Call Ellen Mains at 303-554-8817.
  • Tai Chi. Call Bataan Faigao (longtime Naropa faculty), Rocky Mountain Tai Chi C’huan at 303-447-2556.
  • Japanese tea. “Open hearth” tea ceremony introductions held Mondays between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the teahouse at 2130 Arapahoe Ave.; short and long drop-in sessions welcome.

Colorado’s holistic journal, Nexus, offers an even broader resource for activities in Boulder. Nexus is available in the Sycamore Hallway and at Paramita Campus and has information on women’s health, bodywork, healing, psychology & growth, classes & workshops in addition to spiritual practices and intuitive arts.
