Naropa Announces Partnership With Community Food Share Program
Hunger Task Force to Benefit Whittier Elementary School Students

BOULDER, Colo. (April 27, 2007)— Naropa University students are spearheading a Hunger Task Force in partnership with Community Food Share’s Feeding Families program in order to give low-income families with children at Whittier Elementary School some help at home.  Naropa will host the pilot of the program on Tuesday, May 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Naropa’s 2111 Arapahoe Avenue building.

Whittier Elementary Students that are part of the Food Share Lunch Program will now be able to get a nutritional diet at home.  "I am really excited by this opportunity, and I am honored to be a part of it.  I am also glad to see Naropa students reaching out to the community," says Celeste Selwyn, a beneficiary of the Naropa Hunger Task Force.

Naropa students would also like to help decrease the amount of food waste in the Boulder community by encouraging local businesses to donate their extra food that would otherwise be thrown out.  Student organizers intend for the Naropa Hunger Task Force to be a long-term initiative that is overseen by community volunteers as well as Naropa student groups and the UCAN Serve AmeriCorps Program.

Participants are able to receive one pound of food per family member and menus will be sent home so that families may indicate preferences one week prior to picking up their food.  Interested families will need to bring a photo ID and their Food Share card or a letter from the Boulder Valley School District noting they are on the Food Share Program.  Unclaimed canned food will then be stored in the basement of the 2111 Arapahoe Avenue building until Community Food Share staff has an opportunity to retrieve it.

Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Naropa University is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian liberal arts institution dedicated to advancing contemplative education. This approach to learning integrates the best of Eastern and Western educational traditions, helping students know themselves more deeply and engage constructively with others. The university comprises a four-year undergraduate college and graduate programs in the arts, education, environmental leadership, psychology and religious studies.
