Former Naropa University Board of Trustees Member
Unveils New Documentary on Mixed-Orientation Marriages

BOULDER, Colo. (February 27, 2008)— Following up on the success of her two books, My Husband is Gay and When Your Spouse Comes Out: A Straight Mate’s Recovery Manual (co-authored with Naropa University Professor Deborah Bowman), Carol Grever will preview her new documentary One Gay, One Straight at Naropa University’s Paramita campus on March 3.

Narrated by Ali MacGraw, One Gay, One Straight contains 32 minutes of footage wherein real spouses of both genders explain the circumstances under which they discovered their spouse was gay and how they responded.

“Dozens of decisions and agreements were required,” Grever says. “Foremost was purpose.  What did I want to accomplish?  That wasn't so hard to articulate, since the same motivation drove my books:  To create resources for healing the wounds of heterosexual men and women who unknowingly married homosexual mates.”

After more than 30 years of marriage, Grever’s own husband came out of the closet, which prompted her to write about her experience and interview dozens of people who had similar stories to tell. When My Husband is Gay was first published in 2001, it became a sensation, landing her interviews with the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Anderson Cooper and Diane Sawyer.

One Gay, One Straight, co-produced and directed by Roslyn Dauber, trims 500 pages of transcripts into a concise exploration of the phenomenon. “Nothing they said was scripted…,” Grever explains. “It was like putting together a complex jigsaw puzzle…. This film carries a message of healing and hope and guidance for straight spouses and their families.  It is the only documentary of its kind and I'm sure that there is a need for it.”

The Naropa screening begins at 5 p.m. and is free to the public. The Paramita campus is located at 3285 30th Street.

Three weeks after the Naropa screening, on March 24, the documentary will have its official premier at the Main branch of the Boulder Public Library at 7 p.m. The event is being co-sponsored by the Boulder City Human Relations Commission and PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.)

Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of theNorth Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Naropa University is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian liberal arts institution dedicated to advancing contemplative education.  This approach to learning integrates the best of Eastern and Western educational traditions, helping students know themselves more deeply and engage constructively with others. The university comprises a four-year undergraduate college and graduate programs in the arts, education, environmental leadership, psychology and religious studies.
