The New Leader
Online Exclusive: The Magic of Metamorphosis
It seems that every sector of society faces a different set of challenges more layered and complex than ever before. Top-down leadership styles, where leaders held most of the information, and made important decisions based on their short-term goals and the accumulation of power and wealth, are no longer adequate. The new leader shares knowledge freely, empowers decision-making among individual employees and teams, considers more viewpoints, and weighs the long-term outcomes. Naropa University prepares this new type of leader by combining a rigorous academic experience with a challenging contemplative environment. Students graduate from Naropa with the technical expertise of their fields and the inner resources to face whatever challenges arise.
In the spring issue of Naropa Magazine, past, present, and future leaders provide insight into Naropa’s role in their development. Dr. Stuart C. Lord describes how Naropa cultivates the qualities of new leader, and the founder of the University’s Authentic Leadership program describes a Naropa symposium that featured organizational theorist Peter Senge. Meet Naropa faculty members Jeanine Canty and Rabbi Zvi Ish-Shalom; former faculty member and alumnus Fleet Maull; alumni Warren Karlenzig and Joshua Weinstein; Board of Trustees Chair Martin “Marty” Janowitz and master’s student Nathaniel Janowitz. Discover the connections between three pairs of Naropa faculty and alumni that continue to enhance their professional lives and impact the work they create, including MacAndrew Jack and Abigail Lindemann in psychology, Andrew Schelling and Shin Yu Pai in literary arts, and Barbara Dilley and Damaris Webb in the world of dance. Learn about the history of the former nuclear weapons complex, Rocky Flats, and how Naropa is involved with current guardianship efforts at the site.
