NAROPA UNIVERSITY INSTITUTES STRATEGIC BUDGET
REDUCTIONS AND INVESTMENTS

Must have balanced and sustainable budget to ensure
long-term health of the Institution

BOULDER, Colo. (June 15, 2010) — Naropa University announced today a reduction in force as part of a systematic university-wide initiative to reallocate and better invest its resources in alignment with the strategic priorities of the University.

Based on a careful examination of the university’s finances along with a dialogue with the Naropa community that began in January 2010, the administration, in conjunction with the Board of Trustees, determined strategic priorities and parameters including the development of a sustainable and balanced budget, providing equitable salaries for faculty, and additional investments in enrollment management and information technology. This new financial model precipitated the reduction-in-force, which has affected every area of the university. Individuals being laid off were notified today.

“While these reductions are difficult, these budget alignments are part of Naropa becoming a world class university. Naropa’s budget must be balanced and sustainable” said Dr. Stuart Lord, president. “As we conducted an in-depth evaluation of the university’s financial condition, it became clear we would need to reallocate our resources to invest in strategic initiatives while simultaneously reorganizing the university.”

Going forward, the goal is for the University’s annual expense budget to be limited to revenues that the university projects to generate from educational operations during that same year. All divisions are now reviewing changes they will make in light of institutional priorities and continued commitment to Naropa’s students.

“This has been a very difficult time for the Naropa community,” Dr. Lord said. “But these were necessary changes that align our expenses with our income, and allow us to begin to move forward on a financially sustainable path that allows us to be more fiscally responsible and also ensure a positive future for a great institution rich in history and promise.”

Naropa University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Naropa University is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian liberal arts institution dedicated to advancing contemplative education. This approach to learning integrates the best of Eastern and Western educational traditions, helping students know themselves more deeply and engage constructively with others. The university comprises a four-year undergraduate college and graduate programs in the arts, education, environmental leadership, psychology and religious studies. Naropa University seeks to become the preeminent institution of contemplative higher education in the nation.
