Naropa University and YMCA to Host National Rap Star “I Self Divine”
Public Achievement Conference Concert Features Rap Star, Student Performances
BOULDER, Colo. (April 4, 2007)— In conjunction with the Naropa University hosted Public Achievement Regional Conference, “I Self Divine,” a nationally acclaimed rap star from St. Paul, Minn., will perform at the Lafayette YMCA Thursday, April 12 at 5 p.m. as part of a program of student presentations.
“I Self Divine” will perform as a finale to a spoken word presentation on student activism, a break-dancing session, and student showcases that include elementary students from Lafayette as well as students from Angevine Middle School and Centaurus High School. Student program topics range from Martin Luther King inspired peace work to environmental education.
Naropa University will host the 2007 Public Achievement Regional Conference April 12-13, 2007. Participants in the conference include students from the University of Colorado in Denver, Colorado College, Denver University, Fort Lewis College, Regis University, Colorado State University, the University of Minnesota, and Naropa University.
The conference includes a trip to Centaurus High School in Lafayette, where all conference attendees will listen to a presentation by high school seniors who graduated last year from a one-year Public Achievement program coached by Naropa students. This year, the same high school seniors have taken the initiative to coach students in a similar program at Angevine Middle School, also in Lafayette.
Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Naropa University is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian liberal arts institution dedicated to advancing contemplative education. This approach to learning integrates the best of Eastern and Western educational traditions, helping students know themselves more deeply and engage constructively with others.
