Special Collections
The Special Collections room at the Allen Ginsberg Library holds a variety of valuable resources, ranging from rare and signed books, slides, and art work, to a unique and important collection of audio and video materials.
Policies and Request Form
for Special Collections and Archive Materials
You may view or listen to copies of Naropa Archive recordings (videotapes, audiotapes or CDs) either in the library or by checking them out for a 1 week period. Audio recordings digitized by the Archive Project are also available on the Internet Archive.
To request a listening/viewing copy of material that has not been digitized by the Archive Project, please download this request form, fill it out COMPLETELY, and return it to the library. Blank forms are also available in the library. The Special Collections Coordinator or other library staff will let you know when the copy is ready for check out. Please allow at least 5 days, since we will have to make a listening/viewing copy if one is not available.
The library no longer makes personal copies of most recordings. We will make 1 personal copy of a performance for people who were in the performance. There is a $2.00 charge for a cassette or video tape, payable when the patron picks up their copy. The $2.00 charge does not apply if you provide a clean blank tape. Please note that some recordings include more than one tape, and the charge is per tape, not per recording.
Books, manuscripts, and other materials in Special Collections may only be used in the library under staff supervision, by appointment.

Naropa University Recordings
The Naropa audio tape collection consists of over six thousand tapes of events at Naropa University over its thirty year life span. These tapes record seminal events in the world of education and the arts, including important writers, teachers, and religious leaders. The collection grows every year, as new conferences, the Summer Writing Program, and visiting faculty workshops and lectures are recorded and added to the collections. Many of these tapes have been digitized by the Naropa Audio Archive Project and can be accessed at online at the Internet Archive.
The Naropa video tape collection includes over 1000 videos of Naropa events, including readings, theater productions, lectures, graduations, and student performances. The collection continues to expand.
Binders in the library list the audio and video tapes. In addition, tapes digitized by the Audio Archive Project can be found in HOWLcat, the library catalog. Select "archival audio materials" in the Type drop down menu to limit your search to digitized materials.

Chogyam Trungpa Recordings The library has a collection of Chogyam Trungpa videorecordings available for checkout. A binder with information about the recordings is available at the circulation desk.
Audio and video recordings of Chogyam Trungpa, including some of events that took place at Naropa, may be purchased from the Shambhala Shop by going to their website at http://www.shambhalashop.com/.

Tibetan Collection
The Tibetan Collection is a library of 2,200 volumes, containing many thousands of individual texts, housed in the shrine room at Paramita Campus. Many of these texts were acquired through the PL480 publishing initiative of the U.S. and Indian governments. Others have been donated.
The collection includes a complete set of the Indian texts regarded by Tibetans as the Buddha's teachings as well as a complete set of the Tibetan translations of the commentaries composed by Indian masters. It also includes texts written by Tibetans from all of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism and the Bön religious tradition of Tibet as well as non-religious works on literature, grammar, medicine, and the arts.

Small Press and Chapbook Collection The Small Press and Chapbook Collection includes over 1,000 poetry chapbooks, small press periodicals, and other items related to Naropa's Writing and Poetics program. Many were created by Naropa faculty or visiting artists such as Ted Berrigan, Robert Creeley, Diane DiPrima, and many others.

The Reb Zalman Legacy Project
The Reb Zalman Legacy Project is a collaborative effort of the Yesod Foundation and Naropa University to preserve, develop and disseminate the teachings of Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, better known as "Reb Zalman," an innovative leader in ecumenical dialogue and founder of the Jewish Renewal and Spiritual Eldering movements.
