What are my responsibilities?
This student e-mail system is a web browser-based e-mail program that will allow you to send and receive e-mail. Student e-mail is the university’s primary form of communication with you for advising, registration, and departmental information. We are offering this service for both your personal and university communication. You are responsible for all University communication sent via e-mail and you are strongly encouraged to check your e-mail at least once a week. For instance, you could miss crucial information about Naropa’s web registration, including your password to access web registration. This would mean that you could miss your priority window of opportunity to get into the classes you want. Failure to check email does not relieve you of responsibility for the information sent to you.

For more information check out the Naropa.net student e-mail policy here.

Why I haven't received my username/password letter?
Here are some possibilities:

  • Most username and passwords are given out during student orientation at the beginning of the semester. If you did not attend student orientation, please contact Tashi Browder in student affair. Her e-mail is tashi@naropa.edu and phone number is 303-546-3562.
  • Online students can get their username and password from their online advisors.
  • If you are still having trouble obtaining your username and password, you can contact our student e-mail provider, Terrene communications.
  • You may need to update your current mailing address. Once you do this, please contact office of student affairs.
  • If you have forgotten your username and password, please contact Terrenne Communications

You can contact Terrene here - http://www.naropa.net

How much space do I get?
You get 30MB. That's about 30,000 pages of e-mails, or 200 of 100K attachments. You won't receive any new e-mails if you are over the limit.

How long can I keep my account?
You get to keep it as long as you are a degree-seeking student of Naropa University and follow some basic rules, which include the following:

  1. After graduation, the email will be accessible for 3 months
  2. Don't abuse the service by sending out unsolicited e-mails, attempting to bring the service down, or attempting to hack the server.
  3. Don't use the service to do anything illegal.

Can I use an e-mail client to download my e-mails?
Yes, you can use e-mail clients such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger, Eudora, or other programs that support POP3 protocol to download your e-mails.

    Configurations:
POP3 feature is intended for advanced users. We do not provide technical support on how to setup your e-mail client, as there are way too many different clients and versions. Read your ISP manual, e-mail client documentation, or call your ISP for help!
    • POP3 server: mail.naropa.net
    • SMTP server: mail.naropa.net
      • Only your Inbox will be downloaded. Move your old e-mails to Inbox if you want to download them.
      • If you are behind a firewall, 20 second delay may be experienced when connecting to the POP3 server.
    • Your e-mail address will be your username.
    • For further help on setting this up, please contact Terrene Communications.

Can I forward my e-mails to another address?
Unfortunatly the answer is no. A few questions and curiosities have come "forward" about the reasons for ending the forwarding feature.

Overarching point: It is essential that students receive email from the University. When students don’t receive email, they are missing essential information that is needed to for coursework, registration, financial aid, student activities, workstudy, and more. While convenience is important, it is a very high priority for the University to be sure that students are receiving these essential emails.

Please know that significant research has been collected at Naropafor 4 years, as well as research nationwide about student email forwarding features. Over the past four years, we have gathered some very important feedback and dealt with some very important issues that lead to our decision in not pursuing a forwarding feature in our new email system at Naropa University. Small colleges nationwide that use email as the primary source of university communication have also been grappling with much of these same issues. A majority of the universities we have looked at have implemented (or are implementing) a switch to ending forwarding features, much for the same reasons we have found at Naropa University.

The list of reasons is long and weighty; however a few highlights are listed below:

  • Students not receiving essential campus messages: due to forwarding errors (i.e. forwarded email inbox is full; forwarded email going into junk/spam folders; forwarding errors; undeliverable issues; configuration errors; attachment issues; etc.). Blocking all university email has happened already by two major providers (comcast & yahoo) in which that ISP blocks all email from our domain. All of these factors have caused major confusion and complaints from students, staff, and faculty.
  • Significant security issue: We need to be sure that the person who is receiving the email is the right person in order to protect our students' privacy. There is no way to verify information is being supplied directly by the student or when a student responded from their alternated forwarding account. When emails are forwarded, we cannot be sure that the forwarded address was entered correctly or that another person hasn't taken over the account. In many offices, it is Naropa's policy to *only* email students at their naropa.net address; therefore, staff cannot reply to a personal email address.
  • Significant increase of repairsadding to more and more time for multiple staff members to identify the source of email loops and take corrective action. In the meantime, our ISP bandwidth gets saturated and service suffers until it is corrected. Help call/email requests have dramatically increased, as studentsare asking questions about other personal email systems.
  • Tracking email delivery faculty/staff want to track the receipt of email messages, which is not possible for those that have forwarding enabled.
  • Please do keep in mind that we will allow POP3 download of your emailto your own email client if you wish (aka MS Outlook, Eudora, etc.).

The Naropa University student email account is the primary means of communication within the university. Naropa is joining most other universities in ending the forwarding feature to ensure that communication is received by all of our Naropa students.

I forgot my password or username. What do I do?
If you have forgotten your username or password you may contact Terrene Communications to have them reset it. You can find the most current contact information at http://www.naropa.net. You will need to provide some information to guarantee that it's actually you requesting the password.

  • Your official name as appeared on your registration paper (Student Data Sheet).
  • Your Naropa ID number.
  • Your Naropa.net username (if known).
  • Your date of birth.
  • Your last 4 numbers of your SSN.

How do I change my password?
Log into Naropa.net and click the options button on the left menu. Then click on "change password". Then go ahead and enter your new password.
*** You should change your password regularly so as to better secure your account. If you must, write down your new password in case you forget it. Do not give your password out to anyone else!

Can I change my username?
We will only be able to change your username if:

  • Your official, legal name has changed.
  • Your username is an undesired English word (e.g. Steve Oak may have the username "soak").
For certain special circumstances, we may be able to change your username. Please contact Terrene Communications if your name has changed. They will verify with Student Administrative Services to verify that you have changed your legal name.

How can I avoid getting junk e-mails?
Junk e-mails, or unsolicited e-mails are called "spam." There is a spam filter now running on the naropa.net mail server. This is to help you if you do begin receiving spam due to utilizing the account (for example) online purchasing. You can increase the threshold by using the "Spam Assassin" link on the menu bar. Messages caught as spam will be placed in a folder called "caughtspam" which they can go through if need be. This folder will be deleted every month on the 1st.

How does the Spam Filter work?
The Spam Filter is based on a "hit" scale. I keep mine at 10 so that some email does fall though, but most spam gets caught in the "caughtspam" folder. Every email that gets sent to your address gets graded, basically, on a point scale. The more points it is given, the more likely that it is spam. The lower you keep the hit number, the more emails will be sent to caughtspam.

What is blacklisting? Whitelisting?
Blacklisting - If you add an email address to the blacklist, that email address will no longer be able to send to your address any longer. Whitelist, on the other hand, is a safe senders list. Meaning that any address on this list that you add will (or should) never go to Spam folder.

How many attachments can I send in 1 email message?
Technically you can send as many attachments as you want as long as they do not go over the 2,097,152 byte (~1.5 MB) space limit.
