From the heart

Students at Naropa are engaged in traditional academic learning, but at the same time bring great sincerity to the open-hearted process of un-learning. All labels, credentials and identifications are questioned in the intimacy of not-knowing. It's thrilling to be on this dual path in community.

Honors/awards

Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities, 1985

Courses taught

Zen Buddhism

What book do you find yourself regularly pressing into the hands of students?

Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind. Shunryu Suzuki

Describe a moment when you helped a student reach an “ah ha” or transformational moment.

Student: I am the Buddha.
Me: You are. But do you really believe that?
Student: (laughing nervously) No, I don't.
