Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the field of consulting with a focus on developing relationship-based or authentic, consulting skills. Emphasis is placed on three critical skill areas required of consultants: Managing Self, Managing Clients and Managing Your Practice. This five-week exploratory course is designed primarily for participants interested in making a career change to consulting and self-employment. Furthermore, it provides a foundation on the basic skills needed for a successful consulting relationship such as building trust, collaboration, effective listening, managing expectations and resistance.  Anyone seeking to improve their knowledge of self and their interactions with others in the workplace or business environment can benefit from this course as well.

A combination of lecturettes, group discussion, small group and assigned individual activities and personal reflection are used to meet the following course objectives:

  • To help students identify their specific skills, knowledge and areas of expertise they will focus on in their consulting practice.

  • For students to understand the roles of the consultant and how these differ from the role of employee.

  • To introduce participants to the art, language and critical skills required of authentic consultants.

  • To assist students in developing personal awareness of critical behaviors and strategies needed to obtain their desired consultant role and to successfully manage a consulting relationship.

  • To provide students with strategies and readily adopted ideas for growing and developing their consulting practices.

Participants will leave the course with a clear direction for how to become the type of consultant clients prefer to work with, ideas for managing the challenges of consulting, and strategies for growing and maintaining a vibrant consulting practice.
