Peer Mentor (live-in position)

Position Title: Peer Mentor
Wage: Reduced housing cost

Reports to: Resident Hall Director

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Summary: The Peer Mentor (PM) is a live-in position. The position is offered to upper division undergraduate students (sophomores, juniors and seniors) as well as graduate students. The commitment for this position is 9.5 months beginning August 1st and ending in mid-May. The PM will serve as a mentor to first year students working within lifestyle issues, diversity, transitions, alcohol and other drug issues, general wellness and health, community building and personal support. PM’s will attend trainings in early to mid-august including working with students around alcohol and other drugs, diversity and lifestyle issues and choices. They will also have opportunities for additional trainings throughout each semester.  

Job Duties:

  • 2–3 hours per week of informal or programmed contact with an assigned group of residents in housing.
  • Assisting the Residence life staff with the coordination of check-in/out processes to help residents have a healthy and positive transition into university life.
  • Work with Naropa University faculty and staff to create bridges between curricular and co-curricular activities for residents.
  • Peer Mentors are expected to engage in the community as mentors, educators and positive role models.
  • The PM will report directly to the Resident Hall Director.  
  • PM’s are expected to encourage student involvement in the creation, communication and maintenance of community norms and lifestyle issues.
  • Weekly half-hour long “One-to-One” meeting with an assigned resident advisor.
  • Oversee the process of community meeting facilitation twice throughout each semester.
  • Attend bi-weekly psycho-educational trainings.
  • PM’s are expected to work 5–10 hours per week.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • The PM must be able to work with diverse populations and be actively working toward competency in diversity issues, specifically how they inform the creation of community and living environments. We seek PM’s who are committed to creating safe spaces, and are inclusive of all residents.
  • The PM must possess characteristics including: responsibility, positive attitude, enthusiasm, adaptability, commitment, integrity, ability to establish clear boundaries, team-building skills, clear communication abilities, sound judgment and finally good time-management abilities.
  • The Peer Mentor is a “people-oriented” person. The position requires the ability to develop and guide a cohesive and inclusive community while supporting the academic mission of the university. We seek PM’s committed to developing human potential by setting a positive example in order to accelerate the academic, interpersonal, behavioral, citizenship and leadership skills for resident students at the University.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5

SafeWalk Program Dispatcher

Position Title: Dispatcher, SafeWalk Program
Hours per Week:
25 hours/week
Reports to: Dean of Students
Salary: $10/hour
Department: Student Affairs
FLSA Status: Hourly

Job Summary: This is a temporary position lasting until May 8, 2010 to develop and oversee a SafeWalk pilot program on the Arapahoe Campus. This person would be responsible for coordinating a safe walk program, overseeing a staff of individuals who are escorting students from the Arapahoe Campus to their residences. The dispatcher would be on duty from 5-10 pm Monday-Friday and would receive and document incoming calls, transmit messages to appropriate personnel for dispatching and tracking walking services and keep logs of the daily activities of services rendered.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Acts as shift supervisor in dispatching personnel and equipment in using established protocols.
  • Operates a university cell phone and mobile handheld radio (walkie-talkie). Responsible for these and 2 additional walkie-talkies used by escorting staff in good working order.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and logs of all transmissions, telephone calls and other records, files, information systems.
  • The dispatcher would receive requests for services, make appropriate decisions and efficiently manage limited resources of escorting staff.
  • Develop and implement a training program for SafeWalk staff.
  • Recruits and schedules escort staff to assure continuous availability of the SafeWalk service during the 6pm–10pm hours of operation.
  • Coordinates with Safety and Security personnel (Manager and Patrol Guard) for assistance from them and, as available, may do short tours of Arapahoe Campus to observe and report on campus status.

Job Requirements:

  • Uses good judgment in making decisions, in emergency and routine situations.
  • Knowledge of and experience working problem solving, crisis intervention and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to work successfully with students from diverse backgrounds and perspectives with respect, compassion and heart.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Successful completion of a full background check.

Student SafeWalker

Position Title: SafeWalker
Hours per Week:
4 hours/week
Reports to: Dispatcher/SafeWalk Program
Salary: $200 stipend for fall semester
Department: Student Affairs
FLSA Status: Stipend

Job Summary: Student SafeWalker positions are stipend positions. Students are scheduled on the basis of one, 4-hour shift per week. SafeWalkers are responsible for escorting Naropa students from the Arapahoe Campus to their nearby residences.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide attendance to those wishing accompaniment while walking from the Arapahoe Campus to their nearby residence
  • Be on time for shift
  • Sign out equipment at the start of their shift and return it in good order at the end of shift
  • Assist to the best of one’s ability so that their walking partner feels safe and comfortable during the walk home
  • Inform the Dispatcher/SafeWalk Program at least 2 days in advance if unable to make shift
  • Report promptly at least 10 minutes before his/her shift is scheduled to commence, to allow for any briefings, updates of situations and/or additional instructions for that shift
  • In the event of sudden illness, call in to dispatcher as soon as possible
  • Be available to confirm availability for walking shift
  • Be ready to have the dispatcher call 911 for their location at any time during a walk
  • Report any incidents of harassment, crime, or violence during shift to the Safety and Security personnel (Manager or Patrol Guard)
  • Not use language or behave in a way that makes their walk or partner feel unsafe or uncomfortable
  • Not consume alcohol, illegal drugs or any performance impairing medication prior to commencing a shift
  • Operate walkie-talkie to stay in communication with the dispatcher, behaving appropriately and with decorum when operating radios, as outlined in the SafeWalk manual
  • Report back to dispatcher in person at the end of each walk

Job Requirements:

  • Must be a current Naropa student
  • Must be in good disciplinary and academic standing
  • Possess the skills to relate and respond to a diverse population at the university
  • The ability to work one night a week for four hours
  • Able to deal with stress
  • A very high degree of common sense and situation awareness
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Willing to submit to a background check

Summer Resident Advisor (live-in position)

Position Title: Summer Resident Advisor (live-in position)
Wage:
$500 stipend/month + housing

Job Summary: The Summer Resident Advisor is a paraprofessional, live-in position. The position mainly works with the Summer Writing Program as well as other Naropa summer programs. The RA will serve a vital role in direct service to Naropa’s students living in student housing. Move-in for this position will be on June 8th, 2008, and Move-out will be on July 20th, 2008.

Job Duties:

  • 3–4 nights duty shift per week, starting at 8 p.m.
  • Coordinate check-in/out processes for residents.
  • Work with faculty and staff to create bridges between curricular and co-curricular activities for students.
  • Resident advisors are expected to engage in the community as group leaders, peer counselors, educators, mediators, positive role models and to enforce the policies of the university and Snow Lion Student Housing.
  • The RA will report directly to the resident hall director and is supervised by both the director of housing and the resident hall director. The RA will be expected to work closely with the resident hall director through-out the week reporting on student concerns, personal well-being, and programming initiatives.
  • RA’s are expected to encourage student involvement in the creation, communication and maintenance of community norms and lifestyle issues. They also commit a significant amount of time to the development of community through social, educational and wellness programming.
  • Weekly Residence Life staff meetings.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • The RA must be able to work with diverse populations and be competent in diversity issues, specifically how they inform the creation of community and living environments. We seek RA’s who are committed to creating safe spaces, and is inclusive of all residents.
  • The position must be filled by a current Naropa Student who has preferably completed one semester at Naropa.
  • The RA must possess strong leadership characteristics including: responsibility, positive attitude, enthusiasm, adaptability, commitment, integrity, ability to establish clear boundaries, team-building skills, clear communication abilities, good judgment, a “take charge” attitude with the ability to delegate responsibility when appropriate and finally good time-management abilities. We seek RA’s who are committed to providing excellent leadership for the Snow Lion Community and the Snow Lion Staff.
  • The resident advisor is a “people-oriented” person. The position requires the ability to develop and guide a cohesive and inclusive community while supporting the academic mission of the university through purposeful programming and demonstration of personal integrity. Writing Fellow

Job Summary: The Naropa Writing Center (NWC) is looking for graduate students from all disciplines interested in becoming Writing Fellows. We particularly encourage candidates who will contribute to the diversity of the center to apply. The NWC is a free service that offers one-on-one writing consultation in a positive, relaxed atmosphere. The center’s goal is to provide immediate feedback, to attend to writing questions and concerns, and to facilitate a space where writers (students, faculty, staff, and alumni) may actively engage in the many stages of writing.

Job Duties:

  • Work approximately 10 hours per week in the Naropa Writing Center.
  • Consult with student writers visiting the NWC.
  • Plan workshops as requested by director.
  • Attend meetings.
  • Develop educational materials.
  • Aid with the day-to-day functioning of the NWC.
  • Please note: once training is completed, other opportunities are available such as TA-ing in an undergraduate writing course. Additional opportunities are dependent upon availability, skill, experience, and budget.

Qualifications/Criteria:

  • Applicants must be first-year Naropa graduate students who demonstrate advanced writing ability and an interest in studying writing pedagogy.
  • Writing fellows are required to attend an orientation and take a three-credit hour pedagogy seminar in fall for elective credit. This course examines composition and writing center pedagogy and offers a strong foundation for those interested in teaching in the future.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative work skills are required.
  • Previous experience with teaching or writing centers is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience with learning disabilities, nonnative English speakers, and diversity awareness is a plus.
