Since 1990, the "I Have a Dream"® Foundation of Boulder County has helped over 400 children from low-income areas achieve their education and career g oals by providing long-term personal and academic support, tutoring, mentoring and four-year tuition-assistant scholarships to each graduating student. The organization adopts entire groups of students from elementary schools, or from low-income public housing sites, and works with these children and their families through high school. Currently, there are six IHAD classes in Boulder County, in Boulder, Longmont and Lafayette. The program doubled expected graduation rates for its first two graduating classes of students, and awards over $90,000 in scholarships each year.

As an IHAD volunteer you have the opportunity to cultivate an on-going personal relationship with a child or adolescent (participants are called Dreamers) in an academic program that helps high risk youth stay in school, and provides college scholarships to those who aspire to go on to college. After-school programs exist for Dreamers, ages seven to nineteen. Volunteers can tutor during after-school programming at one of the IHAD sites and/or become mentors to individual Dreamers.

Volunteer/Work Study Opportunities:

1) As an Individual Tutor you meet with an assigned Dreamer one or more times on a weekly basis, and assist the Dreamer with homework or with a specific subject area between the hours of 3:00 - 5:30 pm Monday through Thursday. Tutors also accompany Dreamers on fun outings on Friday afternoons. Tutoring takes place in an IHAD after-school center in Boulder, Longmont, and Lafayette. To become a tutor, volunteers must attend a 20 minute tutor interview and 60 minute individual or group tutor training at the IHAD office in Boulder. Criminal background checks are conducted for all IHAD volunteers and at least two references are required for application.

2) As a Mentor, you meet with your Dreamer at least twice a month for a minimum of one year, and have the ability to take your Dreamer on special outings in and around the community. Mentors offer a caring, consistent, and supportive one-on-one relationship to their Dreamers, often resulting in lasting and impactful bonds between Mentor and Dreamer. To become a mentor, volunteers must attend a 60 minute individual mentor interview and 2.5 hour group mentor training. Criminal background checks, as well as driving record and car insurance checks are conducted for all IHAD mentors and at least two references are required for application.
