Work with children whose parents are enrolled in the Nurturing Program, a parenting/family education process for families in child protection caseloads. Volunteers facilitate structured therapeutic group activities for the children while the parents are attending a parenting class. Portions of each session include activities for the parents and children to participate in together.
Volunteer/Work Study Opportunities:
Volunteers co-facilitate 14 weekly group sessions with children, ages 5-11. Volunteers learn about the dynamics of dysfunctional, abusive family interactions and gain working knowledge of group therapy and group dynamics. Training is provided on the dynamics of child abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, theory and practice of group psychotherapy, knowledge of parent training, child development, criteria for Social Service involvement with families, and child protection procedures.
Commitment is 4 hours per week. There is a required 8 hour training session prior to starting. Sessions run for 14 consecutive weeks, and you must commit to an entire 14 week group. You will receive supervision weekly. Groups are held in Boulder, Longmont and Louisville. Volunteers may commit to more than one locale.
There is also an option of working as a Case Aide-Child Protection worker. This is an 8 hour a week commitment. You would work with casework staff assisting with case management and a variety of services for child protection clients. You would supervise, observe, and record interactions during visits between children and their biological parents; provide transportation; and work closely with ongoing child protection teams. An 8 hour training is required and you would receive weekly supervision.. |
