Fall 2005 Practice Day Talk:
Please take advantage of the opportunity to hear this semester's Community Practice Day talk, by Dr. Victoria Howard, "Fearless Openness: A Contemplative Approach to Living in Perilous Times." The room was filled to capacity and quite alive. The talk includes a guided visualization and lively question and answer section. The talk is particularly timely given the catastrophes that have occurred in our coastal areas, Pakistan and Guatemala.—Sherry Ellms, contemplative practice coordinator. Principles of a Buddhist Science of the Mind with B. Alan Wallace
Buddhism has much to offer modern science, including its means of observing the mind directly and exploring the origin and nature of mental events. In this workshop, Alan discussed methods for refining attention and applying it to the rigorous study of the mind. B. Alan Wallace has been an interpreter and organizer for the landmark conferences with H.H. the Dalai Lama and Western scientists organized by The Mind and Life Institute. To celebrate Earth Day (April 22), Naropa planned a weeklong series of events in celebration of the Earth. Within this context, we held a Town Hall Panel on global climate change on Wednesday, April 19 in our Performing Arts Center. The panelists were Linda Mearns, Director of the Institute for the Study of Society and the Environment at NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research); Malaika McKee-Culpeper, environmental justice advocate; and Mark Ruzzin, Mayor of Boulder. Each panelist gave a ten-minute presentation followed by questions from the audience.
