We provide AFFORDABLE COUNSELING to Naropa University students on a limited basis.
In the 2007–08 academic year, three MA intern counselors are available for providing counseling to students at a sliding scale per session (no one will be turned away based on an inability to pay).
How to set up an appointment:
Please print and fill out the intake packet or visit the Naropa Student Affairs office to pick up a paper copy. Review the counselor’s bios listed below and contact one of them directly to set up an appointment. You must bring your completed intake packet to your first session or you will need to reschedule your appointment.
Carlos Hernandez
Carlos Hernandez is an On-Campus Counselor Intern for students at Naropa University. Carlos is in his third year of the Transpersonal Counseling Psychology Master's program at Naropa. He is an international student from Mexico. Carlos' prior training and experience includes working with Holotropic Breathwork, addictions recovery and hospice care. This experience has allowed Carlos to understand in a better way the depths of human existence and the needs for an alternative treatment for spiritual emergencies. His interest and main focus of work is the discovery and development of the spiritual potential of the client to be able to make it useful in daily life, in a grounded way. The re-connection of the clients with their inner healer is of essential need because it empowers the person to be their own healers. Carlos' style is an eclectic mixture of Transpersonal Psychology, Gestalt Therapy and Dreamwork. His work is synthesized by the paradoxical theory of change by Frederick Perls "Change occurs when one becomes what he is, not when he tries to become what he is not ".
Peggy Jones
Peggy is an on-campus counselor intern for Naropa Students. She is in her third year of the Transpersonal Counseling Psychology master's program at Naropa. Through her experiences with out-reach and transitional programs, Peggy's background includes working with family issues, relationship dynamics, grief & loss, self-esteem issues, addictive patterns and life transition issues. She also has professional and personal experience with diversity issues, GLBT, identity formation and eating disorders. Her therapeutic style encompasses Gestalt therapy and cognitive-behavioral techniques rooted in a strong belief of positive-regard that we all have purpose and we belong. Peggy comes from the perspective that as we all journey through this world we meet difficulties along the way and sometimes feel alone. She sees her role as therapist as accompanying her clients through their journey in the spirit of unconditional acceptance. "When we are seen, heard and accepted – healing begins."
Jill Roth
Jill is an on-campus counselor intern for Naropa students. In her third year of the Transpersonal Counseling Psychology master's program at Naropa, Jill integrates Eastern and Western philosophies in her counseling style. Through the process of cultivating a safe and authentic relationship, Jill journeys with the client through his/her natural process of self-discovery, healing, and positive transformation. She draws on the client's inherent wisdom and resilience, and helps facilitate the deepening of the client's awareness and connection to Self and Other. Jill's diverse background includes working with clients to explore questions, concerns, and obstacles involving life transitions, addictions, depression, anxiety, stress, body image, physical health & wellness, sexuality, identity development, and career decisions. Jill brings a compassionate, centered presence to the dynamic process of therapy, and helps the client access integration and balance of the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical, and social aspects of life.
