Words with Anne Waldman
Allyson Behnke: "This past weekend Anne Waldman came to Washington, DC to celebrate the National Gallery of Art’s exhibition of 'Beat Memories: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg' (on view in the West Building through September 16), and to perform Allen Ginsberg’s historic and culturally iconic poem 'Howl'...I was lucky enough to tag along with her on a tour of Allen Ginsberg’s exhibit led by Sarah Greenough, senior curator and head of the department of photographs at the National Gallery of Art, on Friday morning. Later, Saturday afternoon, I had the pleasure of interviewing her."

When personal beliefs conflict with professional ethics
Inside Higher Ed: "On Tuesday, a federal judge upheld the right of a counseling program at Eastern Michigan University to kick out a master's student who declined to counsel gay clients in an affirming way -- as required by the university program and counseling associations. The judge found that the university was enforcing a legitimate curricular requirement -- namely that counseling students learn to work with all kinds of clients in ways that did not judge their values or orientations."

"I'm inspired by the magic that is created in a theatre space...my paintings often defy still life traditions by releasing conventional notions of weight and space...with marks on a surface which can animate a space in so many different ways. I often explore for months, or even years, with the same shapes."

"Jewish Renewal contemplates meditation"
Daily Camera: "Appt, an adjunct professor at Naropa University, said he was initially drawn to contemplative meditation as a way to take a more active role in his faith instead of acting as a spectator. In the community where he grew up, he sometimes felt as if he was only watching a rabbi and cantor pray during services, not participating in the services himself."

"My Lunch with Mihoko"
Via the Allen Ginsberg Project, Ellen Pearlman writes:
"Zen Buddhism, admittedly, is not my specialty, for my real training is in South East Asian Vipassana and Tibetan tantric meditation, which I have pursued for the past 35 years. During my research, the more I read Dr. Suzuki's work, the more I wanted to know about Suzuki the man...To help answer my questions, I located Dr. Taira Kemmyo Sato of the Three Wheels Organization in the U.K., who studied with Dr. Suzuki until the day he collapsed and died of an intestinal obstruction at age 96 in Japan. He suggested I get in touch with Mihoko Okamura, Dr. Suzuki's secretary for the last fifteen years of his life, now living in Kyoto, Japan."
