Additional Admission Requirements

MA Transpersonal Counseling Psychology:
Wilderness therapy

In addition to the standard graduate admission requirements, the following is required for MA Transpersonal Counseling Psychology: Wilderness Therapy:

MA Transpersonal Counseling Psychology: Wilderness Therapy Supplemental Application and Prerequisite Form

  • Prior work experience in a clinical setting is recommended; experience in working with others is essential.
  • Personal maturity.
  • Master's level writing ability and strong verbal communication skills.
  • An on-site interview is required for all applicants who are being considered.
  • Applicants must have completed course work in Abnormal Psychology (3), Developmental Psychology (3) and Theories of Personality (3)
  • Experience in wilderness travel, campcraft, and leave-no-trace camping including a trip (as leader or participant) of at least 14 days in the backcountry that meets the following criteria:
    • 14 days outside under the stars (no huts, cabins or hostels)
    • travel by personal means (no horses, rafts or kayaks)
    • carry all necessary gear for food and equipment (no car camping or use of   horses, lamas or sherpas)

  • Preferably students have developed one outdoor skill besides backpacking.
  • Advanced first aid skills (students are required to complete a Wilderness First Responder course by the beginning of their second year.)
  • Adequate physical condition to participate in the program’s field activities. This includes the ability to carry a forty to fifty-pound backpack on and off trail for five to ten miles in a day; intermediate-level swimming ability; ability and willingness to participate in rock climbing; horseback riding; gardening.
