BA Traditional Eastern Arts
The 36-credit Traditional Eastern Arts major is grounded in sitting meditation practice, which is required for students in all three concentrations. Through the practice of sitting meditation, introduced in Shambhala Meditation Practicum, students begin to discover simplicity and clarity of mind and develop "here and now awareness."
In the introductory Exploring Traditional Eastern Arts course, students explore sitting meditation, t'ai-chi, yoga, aikido and ikebana, and study the philosophy of each of these disciplines and how they interrelate. This prepares them to choose one of three concentrations:
In addition to the sequence of courses in their chosen body/mind discipline, students take academic courses in the history, philosophy and culture of the discipline. Depending on their chosen concentration, students may take courses in yoga history, theory and philosophy; Sanskrit; Zen Buddhism; or ikebana, among others.
Minor in Traditional Eastern Arts
In addition to the Bachelor of Arts degree program, the Traditional Eastern Arts department offers a 12-credit minor. To minor in Traditional Eastern Arts, students must complete 9 credits in one awareness discipline (t'ai-chi ch'uan, aikido or yoga) plus 3 credits in another TRA course.
Certificate Program in Traditional Eastern Arts
The department also offers a 30-credit certificate program with concentrations in T'ai-chi Ch'uan, Aikido and Yoga Teacher Training.
