BA Religious Studies
Through the 36-credit Religious Studies major, students explore religion in a variety of ways, with an emphasis upon the expression of historical traditions in contemporary life. Special emphasis is placed upon the role of contemplative practice in the world's great religions, especially Buddhism. All students must take a series of 18 credits that introduce the study of religion, Buddhist meditation practice and an introductory study of three different religious traditions. The additional 18 credits may be selected from core areas of study: contemporary issues in religion, contemplative practice, Buddhism or study abroad.
The BA in Religious Studies is an interdisciplinary degree, providing graduates with the knowledge base and intellectual, communication, and interpersonal skills essential to success in any career. It provides preparation for graduate education in law, business and the helping professions as well as in any area of the social sciences or humanities where in-depth knowledge of religion will be a distinct advantage in one's career. More specifically, knowledge of religion—and the ability to think clearly and communicate effectively about it—is valuable in fields that involve public affairs, international and cross-cultural relations, religious issues and groups, or interaction with diverse individuals and populations. While it provides insights into the role of religion in personal, group, and societal identity and conflict, studying religion does not require any particular religious back ground or commitment.
The department also offers a Minor in Religious Studies and a Minor in Sanskrit or Tibetan, as well as a Certificate Program in Religious Studies.
Program Highlights
Contemplative Education
Courses are offered in an environment that is contemplative, integrating the study of traditional liberal arts disciplines with the nourishment of the personal journey and inherent wakefulness of the student.
In-Depth Study of Buddhism
Because Naropa also offers an MA in Religious Studies, concentration in Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, we have rich course offerings in Buddhism in the areas of history, culture, philosophy and basic texts as well as meditation intensives offered by masters of major Buddhist practice traditions.
Visiting Student Program
The university also offers a comprehensive one-year program in Buddhist Studies for visiting upper-division students from other undergraduate institutions with majors in religious studies, anthropology or philosophy.
