BFA Performance
The BFA in Performance offers rigorous interdisciplinary training in dance, acting and vocal work, combined with the rich experiential and intellectual traditions of contemplative education. Working together as an ensemble, students will train in a variety of performance techniques and styles, as well as develop original performance work and participate in directed performance projects. In addition, academic studies in both Naropa’s core curriculum and the BFA in Performance will work to heighten sensitivity to historical and cultural perspectives. A strong internal lens is cultivated through Naropa’s rich tradition of contemplative practices, bringing increased awareness and clarity to the creative process.
The BFA in Performance strives to create a unique environment for training young artists to participate fully and effectively through the integration of:
- Support of individual creativity and the creation of original performance work;
- A rigorous academic component of Performance and Critical Studies;
- The integration of mindfulness/awareness practices drawn from Naropa’s origin as a Buddhist-inspired university;
- A unique mentoring relationship with arts faculty who support the student's artistic and academic development from first declaration of the major through final senior projects
The academic context for the BFA in Performance degree is established in the first two years through participation in the University’s core curriculum and includes field requirements in performance studies including historical, contextual and critical studies of contemporary culture and art.
Performing Arts Faculty and Guest Artists provide a rich interface with current techniques and styles as they teach and create work with BFA students. Additionally, close association with the MFA Theater: Contemporary Performance program serves to enrich the BFA curriculum by providing performance opportunities.
Students must successfully complete 30 credits, including the "gateway" course led by BFA Faculty before entering the program. Transfer students are encouraged to apply and will be evaluated on an individual basis for entry into the BFA.
