Fields of Study

Students in the Interdisciplinary Studies program can choose courses from any of the academic departments offered at Naropa University. Some of the most popular ones for Interdisciplinary Studies students are Religious Studies, Contemplative Psychology, Visual Arts, Environmental Studies and Contemplative Education. Please see Undergraduate Academics for more information.

Plan of Study

The assignment for the Gateway Seminar is the creation of your Learning Agreement that is based upon your original "Plan of Study," which you submitted during admissions or application to declare your major.

Written in a succession of required drafts, your Learning Agreement, when completed, describes in detail your Interdisciplinary Studies program. The completed Learning Agreement must incorporate the following:

  1. Topic and Thesis Proposal
  2. Disciplines, Methods and Definitions
  3. Independent Studies, Consortia, Travel and Internships
  4. Project
  5. Mentors
  6. Courses
  7. Annotated Bibliographies
  8. Copies of Learning Agreement and Addenda

Mentoring

Before the end of the Gateway Seminar, each Interdisciplinary Studies student chooses two mentors, and everyone involved signs a working agreement. The mentoring relationship is created to last through the student’s semesters of Interdisciplinary Studies, culminating in the mentor’s role as readers/assessors of the student’s portfolio, annotated bibliographies and thesis.
