Naropa Study Abroad in Bhutan
The Naropa University Bhutan Study Abroad Program is a unique opportunity for international learning at the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB). Open to all students currently enrolled at a U.S. university, you will spend a semester at RUB, fully immersed in Bhutanese culture, experiencing the arts, spirituality, sustainable practices, mythology, education, and extraordinary landscapes. The vibrant union of the ancient Himalayan culture with Bhutan's modern global leadership in Gross National Happiness will provide a fertile ground for inspiring creative research. As you engage in cross-cultural explorations and encounter diverse views, you will be introduced to effective tools for intercultural work, including contemplative practices, deep listening, and holding complex realities. Through your studies and experience, you will gain a sense of your leadership, finding a confident voice and understanding of your role as a global citizen.
As an RUB student, you will dress in traditional Bhutanese clothing, live with Bhutanese students in campus dorms, eat in the cafeteria, etc. There are three required Naropa University (NU) courses and a choice of two courses at the Royal University of Bhutan (a total of 15 credits per semester). For Naropa students, these credits will apply toward your major or electives. Students from other U.S. universities should consult with their academic advisor to see how these credits will apply.
English is the language of instruction in Bhutanese schools and universities. Following a three-week orientation training with Naropa faculty, you will spend the semester in residence at a selected RUB campus taking your RUB courses and completing your NU courses, including your research project. Read "Circling Back to the Source" in the spring issue of Naropa Magazine.
