Cheryl A. Hemmerle: ten girls1

Spring '11 TOC

ten girls face a chalkboard
      heads bowed
      hands bound
      behind their backs
      with duct tape

everything is black and white
      black chalkboard
      white-washed walls
      black dresses
      white aprons
      black bonnets
      white light

ten girls honor their elders
      even this outsider
      with a shotgun and pistol

everything is quiet
no throats speak to plead for life
no feet shuffle to run away
no eyes cry to beg for mercy

one
      by
            one
they
      are
            shot
fall
      to
            the
                  floor

everything is
      technicolor
      noise

1. On October 2, 2006 in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, 32-year-old Charles Roberts entered a one-room schoolhouse in the Amish community armed with a shotgun, a pistol, a knife and 600 rounds of ammunition.
