Sarah Cooke: Donatello 2

Spring '11 TOC

so much is kept unseen
by those whose infant selves
remain untouchable
sealed in crates
they could not help but build

and who am I to criticize
I've done my share of building
though my crate
keeps me tucked
behind the pages of
Gary Snyder
it is no less effective

then again
language is
a trap door
when properly implemented

so much is kept unseen
behind outlined eyes
and flushed cheeks
behind names of
prestigious institutions
and carefully planned
life trajectories

an essential strategy
if fear and doubt
are to be out-
maneuvered
their sore spots
protected
from public view and
private taste
far away

to stay

unseen
