Gary Snyder is a poet, essayist, lecturer, and environmental activist. He has translated works
from ancient Chinese and modern Japanese into English. He has served on the faculty
of the University of California, Davis, and also the California Arts Council. In 1974,
his Turtle Island was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for poetry.
