MFA in Writing & Poetics

The MFA in Writing and Poetics is a two-year, 49-credit graduate degree program, including four academic semesters and two summer sessions in which students study and work with a faculty of active and established writers. Small classes and a hands-on approach offer the kind of attention that will help one's writing and literary study develop significantly over the course of the program.

Students meet and work with peers in a concentrated but noncompetitive atmosphere. Collaborating on projects, both in and outside the classroom, creates bonds of friendship and collegiality that often continue after graduation. Involvement in letterpress printing, literary magazine publication, reading performances and the Outreach Teaching Program provide further opportunities for participation in this lively art community.

Program Structure

The MFA curriculum balances requirements in writing workshop courses, literature and cultural studies courses along with contemplative courses and university wide electives. Students generally enter the MFA program in the Summer Writing Program although entry can take place in the fall or spring semesters as well.

When applying to the Writing and Poetics program, a student chooses to concentrate in prose, poetry or translation. This decision does not represent an exclusive commitment to one or another mode of writing but indicates a primary involvement with poetry, prose or translation over the course of the program.
