Transpersonal Service Learning Placements

• C.I.C.L.E. (Cyclists Inciting Change thru Live Exchange) is a not-for-profit group, based in Los Angeles that seeks to promote the bicycle as a viable and sustainable transportation choice. Their primary objective is to get people thinking about transporting themselves responsibly -- making positive choices for ourselves, others and especially the planet.

• The Catamount Institute’s (CI) program volunteers demonstrate a passion for inspiring ecological stewardship. Program volunteers provide administrative support for day-to-day operations and also support the development, implementation and marketing of CI’s education, leadership and membership programs.

• Hotline counselor with the House of Ruth Maryland (HRM), one of the nation's leading domestic violence centers. My responsibilities include providing victims of domestic violence with emotional support, safety planning, and recommendations to other HRM services.

• The Inner Cities Outings branch of the Madison Sierra Club. This organization promotes activities like hiking, skiing, and camping for kids who might not otherwise have such an opportunity. Deb also tutored in a literacy program in her second semester

• Washington State University Extension and 4-H. Deb participated in two 4-H Rite of Passage Trips as well as organizing, compiling and publishing a website devoted to Rite of Passage and 4-H.

• Tutoring one magnificent woman to boost her test-taking skills and prepare for the GED, through the ProLiteracy program.

• A volunteer position as the desk clerk at the Yoga Center of Medford, a spacious, light-filled, wellness center, has steadily grown into employment 30 hours a week. Her responsibilities include producing the monthly newsletter and event coordinating.

• The Recovery Center for Alcohol and Drug Dependence called The Retreat in Wayzata, MN. His role is to share his experience, strength and hope with the guests as well as be the middle man between the staff and the guests. He also assists the staff in outreach programs, marketing strategies and the development of spiritual retreat weekends.

• The Agency for New Americans, whose mission is to assist refugee families arriving from around the world who have faced persecution based on race, religion, social or political opinion. We work to facilitate social integration into the larger community through English lessons, acculturation, job-seeking skills, and guidance in building a new life.

• Stone Circle, a resource for women’s spirituality. Our core groups are circles that meet on a monthly basis to support each other on our journey. Margie is tasked with heading an effort to increase the visibility of the organization with the intention of creating more circles, and expanding our audience for the celebrations, workshops and retreats that we facilitate.

• A service project being a volunteer advocate with CASA (Court Appointed Service Advocate). The key responsibilities are investigating, facilitating, monitoring and advocating in the best interest of the abused and/or neglected child.

• Spiritual Directions: planned and offered a number of workshops with another TSL student, including Nature and Spirituality, A Taste of Deep Ecology, A Council of All Beings (Joanna Macy's work). Also initiated and organized a group interested in ecological issues that will be continuing to offer a forum for education, discussion and support. (Diane Allan)

• Partners for Pets in Troy, IL (Larry Berarducci)

• The Soldier Wellness Center: Involved the development of an online community for soldiers, veterans and their families that promotes the wellness of body, mind and spirit. (Matt Brannagan)

• Women Helping Girls in the Rochester City School District: Administrative duties in addition to responsibilities as a mentor which included supporting, guiding, and being a friend to a young girl. (Angela Brown)

• Habitat for Humanity - Hurricane Katrina Relief Builds: Offering hope and helping to rebuild lives in the aftermath of the 2005 hurricanes (Katrina and Rita), by building simple quality homes along side the partner families (those needing housing) in the Louisiana Gulf Coast area. (Kim Collins)

• Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, VT: served as a teacher in the Thresholds and Decisions program. (Megan Danforth)

• Wildlands Restoration Volunteers (WRV), Boulder, Colorado: Involved helping to recruit volunteers and assist with implementing restoration projects. (Sarah Delaloye)
The Ronald McDonald House in Ottawa Canada: home away from home for out-of-town families whose children are diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses. (Dorothy Hutt)

• The Network for The Great Turning (UK) & Spiritual Directions (Canada): facilitating a local ecopsychology study group, working with a small team on the creation of a web site, and the publicizing and co-facilitating of three workshops. (David Johnson)

• University of Wisconsin - Superior in Superior, WI.: Designed and taught an entirely new course titled "Art & Ecopsychology". (Susan Loonsk)

• The Sacramento Zoo: Service was dedicated to my fellow sentient beings within our shared animal kingdom, human and non-human; served alongside Zoo Keepers in preparing diet, cleaning exhibits and dens, assisting in care and maintenance. (Michael Mallett)

• Anam Chara Hospice in Boulder, CO.(Chris Menne)

• The Ark of Love- Puerto Rico Chapter (An international organization that seeks to provide spiritual support to abandoned children in different countries.) The Puerto Rico chapter adopted a children's hospital to and support them in their spiritual needs. Responsibilities consisted of coordinating with group members different activities to visit the Hospital, material for the children, and fund raising. (Damaris Negron)

• The Institute for Family Enrichment, Program titled Nurturing The Families of Hawaii on Maui, HI: we presented a different topic of awareness for the parents and children to foster emotional literacy. (Melissa Newirth)

• Kaki Bukit Centre (Prison School), Singapore Prison Service: involved in the Family Support and Education Programme (FSEG) for Reformative Trainees and their families as a regular volunteer facilitator (Chin Pei Tan)

• Jewish Family and Children Services, Inc., Sarasota, Florida: Service consisted of assisting the Director of Jewish Healing in a variety of ways, such as: training volunteer visitors to the ill (in hospitals, nursing homes and at home), co-facilitating Bereavement Support Groups and facilitating a weekly Caregiver Support Group. • Emerson Middle School in Livonia, Michigan: working with a group of ten seventh grade girls on issues of self-esteem, boundaries, feminine role models, dealing with difficult emotions, and being of service to self and community

• Stone Circle: working at a non-profit organization devoted to inspiring and enhancing the potential of women today

• The Magic Forest Institute: working at a private, open classroom type of school for children grades one through eight

• The Center for Council Training: doing council work in the public school system

• The Medicine Horse Program: working with groups of teenagers who are in horse handling training and therapy

• A parenting education program that services both the Telluride and Norwood, Colorado communities: bringing Transpersonal and contemplative ideas into parenting education

• Miami University (Ohio) LeaderShape program: working with students in meditation, council practice, and individual coaching

• A Conservative synagogue: bringing contemplative, neo-Chasidic practice to the members by leading workshops incorporating meditation, chant, council, and sacred study

• Prison Dharma Network: participating in a meditation class at the Boulder County Jail, and also helping lead the Peaceful Warrior Program at Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center

• Gilda's Club: supporting persons on their cancer journey, as well as their family members and friends, by offering sessions on beginning meditation, guided progressive relaxation and breath work

• Catholic Charities Soup Kitchen: helping the homeless, assisting in the kitchen's prep for their lunch time meal

• A senior citizen English discussion group in Lyons, France: leading discussions with the elders about their lives and the world .

• Habitat for Humanity in the Dallas area: building homes and learning the organizational structure

• A non-profit radio station in Salida, Colorado: offering a weekly show called “Contemplative Living”

• A hospice and bereavement center in Minnesota: offering family support and training

• A women’s shelter in Houston, Texas: teaching yoga and stress management to the residents

• Volunteering in a Colorado program that focuses on dreamwork

• Secondary education: creating and facilitating a weekly support circle and two long weekend retreats for secondary education teachers called “Odyssey into the Heart of Teaching”

• The Jung Society in Brazil: working to introduce Transpersonal Psychology concepts and practices to local psychologists

• A non-profit adolescent center in Mexico City, Mexico: offering sex education programs for youth at risk

• A community college in upstate New York: offering students Transpersonal practices such as yoga, council, trance dance and meditation

• Developing community based conservation and recycling centers near Toronto, Canada

• A California assisted living center: working with the elderly and infirmed

• A Pennsylvania hospice: developing grief education programs and working with staff in areas of burnout and stress management

• An Alzheimer’s facility in Massachusetts: working and communicating with patients in the facility

• Creating and leading days of reflection for social change activists from economically challenged communities in Ireland

• Capacitar, Inc: becoming a trainer in an international program that supports individuals and communities suffering from trauma, violence and abuse

• A children’s theater in inner city Denver: helping to run the theater which focuses on the development of self esteem in children

• Creating and guiding a three to four day wilderness retreat for individuals referred by Utah area psychotherapists
