Interview with Amanda Mahan

Name: Amanda Mahan

Number of semesters at Naropa: 3. Will be graduating in 2008

Off-campus activities/hobbies/interests: martial arts, pilates

Past experiences in mental health field and/or meditation: vipassana retreat, studied yoga, pranyama in India

How was your experience of Maitri retreats? Amazing! I feel I was able to touch the place of true compassion within myself and also able to recognize all the subtle ways that I can be self aggressive.

What do you wish you had known about Naropa and MACP dept. before arriving here?   That I should have started therapy (my own) before classes began.

What is challenging about going to Naropa and the MACP dept? There is a certain amount of groundlessness that becomes unavoidable as you go through the program.

What is rewarding about going to Naropa and the MACP dept? The opportunity for self discovery and the cultivation of Maitri. A master’s degree is also helpful!

What have you learned about yourself by going to Naropa and the MACP dept? I couldn’t list them all! In general, a much greater awareness of myself and all the subtlety that composes the “self”.

Complete this sentence: Contemplative psychotherapy is . . . allowing space for whatever needs to arise and honoring that space by sharing it with others.

Life at Naropa and the MACP dept is… an adventure.
