Devised Theater Community

The following is a sample of the companies that have been formed by Naropa Alumni:

mugwumpin - San Francisco, CA
mugwumpin, a San Francisco–based performance company, seeks to restore the relevance of live, theatrical performance, particularly for young adults, by reinventing received models of creation and presentation. mugwumpin expands cultural notions of narrative, venue and text through work that privileges visual image over text, draws inspiration from other cultures and develops from a collaborative process.

The Octopus League – Boulder, CO
The Octopus League is an organization committed to creating innovative and imaginative theater for the Boulder community and beyond. The League’s productions are created collaboratively, and appeal to a broad audience through their dynamic mix of physical and movement-based theater. Projects usually incorporate music, dance, humor and pathos. One theme is common to all projects: our shared humanity. With very minimal use of props and sets, the actors use their skill, bodies and collective imagination to bring the performance space and the images to life.

Split Knuckle Theatre – London, UK
Split Knuckle is a collaborative ensemble that makes dynamic, physical and powerful theatre concerned with the timeless questions of human experience. Using the expressive power of the human voice and body, we seek to engage the imagination to reveal the extraordinary depth behind the everyday. We hope to surprise, to entertain and to enlighten. We are committed to the role of theater in our communities, and to that end we are involved as directors, teachers and educators across the world ( USA, UK, Greece, Argentina, Afghanistan), working with both professional artists and young people to provoke them into creating the theater of tomorrow.

Three Sticks Theatre Company – Minneapolis, MN
We aim to create theatre that is exciting, innovative and most importantly, moving for an audience through original music, compelling narrative and passionately physical theatre. We believe that life provides the ultimate source for theatre, and that through telling its spectrum of stories, it is possible to engage with that which is universally relevant. Our creation process is a continual search for a theatrical language which speaks to all cultures—vibrant, immediate and engaging.

TigerLion Works – Minneapolis, MN

TigerLion intends to produce creative work that brings people together in celebration of the inherent goodness and wisdom of human beings.
