Intercambio is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization in Boulder County. It was founded in October 2000, in response to an expressed need of immigrants to learn English and be more integrated within the community. Intercambio’s mission is to increase opportunities and independence for immigrants, and to build a richer, more integrated community by reducing language and cultural barriers in Boulder County.
Intercambio provides English classes designed to meet students’ individual needs, information on community resources, and intercultural social events. Intercambio is the only program in Boulder County that offers low-cost weekly English classes at students’ homes, work sites, and community centers. Classes are offered at flexible times and are taught by volunteer teachers from the community.
Volunteer/Work Study Opportunities
Naropa students, as volunteer teachers, receive ongoing training and the opportunity to help adults learn English. It’s also a great opportunity to form intercultural relationships. The commitment is to teach English to adults for 4–8 hours a week, for at least 4–6 months, depending on how often and regularly classes are held. A 6-hour training (offered monthly) is required for all volunteers. Make sure to enroll in a training early, as limited spaces are available. There is a $25 suggested fee for the training, which covers background checks, teaching materials, training materials, and food. The Community Work Study Program is looking for students who can commit to both fall and spring semesters.
